3rd Grade Plans
Focus Area: Reading: Fact/Opinion, Grammar: Pronouns, Phonics: Consonants (c,ck,ch)
Writing: Compare/Contrast; Cursive
Spelling Words: neck, bucket, locker, police, chase, erase, once, face, house, jacket
Vocabulary Words: avenue, ducklings, nest, pool, splash, spring
Phonics: TSW utilize FUNdations to enhance phonics. TSW review all spelling words by having
pre-test. After pre-test, tsw correct any misspelled words in spelling notebooks.
WRITING: SOL 3.8 Cursive
TSW plans and write a compare/contrast explanation. TSW continue writing final drafts. TTW
assist students with any improvements needed. TSW complete self-assessments with assistance
from teacher.
Grammar/ SOL 3.10 Pronouns
TSW identify pronouns as replacements for nouns. TTW remind students that pronouns take
the place of nouns and noun phrases. TTW read sentences and have the student identify
pronouns. TTW write the pronouns on board and ask the students to identify phrases that
could be used in 10 sentences and write a pronoun for phrases. (P.B. pg. 106) TTW check for
accuracy.
Reading: SOL 3.4c
TSW distinguish between fact and opinion. TTW review what is a “fact” and “opinion”. TTW ask
a pair of volunteers to debate a statement. After the debate, ttw review facts/opinions of the
debate. TTW explain why the statements are fact or opinion. TTW read the text definition of
fact and opinion and ask students to identify clue words that express what someone feels or
thinks. TTW read “Moving along Bike Trails”. TSW practice determining if statements are fact or
opinion using P.B. pg. 61. TTW check for ts’s response for accuracy.
Math:
SOL: 3.1place value, 3.2 rounding, 3.3 comparing numbers
TSW review place value, rounding, comparing value of numbers, adding and subtracting for
math end of the nine weeks test. TTW use place value charts by putting numbers onto chart
when asked by teacher. IP: TSW underline numbers when given a specific place value (Ex.
Underline number in ten thousands place. TTW model how to circle and draw arrows to
numbers when rounding while saying rounding chant. IP: TS’s will say the rounding chant while
practicing the chant on mini-boards. TTW review how to compare numbers and review the
signs (<,> and =). TTW set up problems and model how to compare numbers by looking at each
place to compare numbers. (Ex. Look at the numbers in the thousands place, hundreds place,
and so forth) IP: TSW practice setting up numbers on a place value chart and comparing the
numbers. TTW check student’s answers for accuracy.

Vocabulary Words: avenue, ducklings, nest, pool, splash, spring
Phonics: TSW identify words that have (c, ck, ch) sounds. TTW write them on index cards. TSW sort each
word card under its correct category. TSW echo each word card after the teacher and identify the letter
that makes the /k/ sound.
WRITING: SOL 3.10
TSW write cursive. TSW practice writing over curve endings. TSW trace and write letters and joining
letters. TSW write down curve joining letters. TTW assist the students with writing the letters. IP: The
student will practice writing the days of the week and their names.
Grammar/SOL 3.10 Pronouns: TSW learn to use pronouns correctly. TTW review how to use pronouns
when we talk about ourselves (I and Me). TTW explain the use of pronouns rules (I, me, us, we). TTW
read and write example sentences and have students choose the correct pronouns. (Ex, we, us would
like a candy bar.) IP: TSW use pronouns in word box to take the place of underlined words. P.B. pg. 107
Reading: SOL 3.6a-f Non-Fiction
TTW review vocabulary words and discuss meanings. TSW incorporate a variety of printed materials for
students to use when understanding context clues to identify unknown words. TTW read sentences
(written by teacher) for each word and have students give examples for each word. After examples, ttw
write the definitions on board and tsw copy into reading notebooks. TSW share strategies they use to
figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words when they read. TTW have the students use context clues
to figure out unknown words in non-fiction story “Chibi, A True Story from Japan”. TTW and TSW read
specific sections of the story, stopping to check for comprehension and understanding of fact and
opinion.
Math:
SOL: 3.15/3.16 Time; 3.21/3.22 Graphs, 3.5/3.6 Fractions
TSW review time, temperature, graphs, and fractions. TTW model how to tell time to the min. using Judy
Clocks. TTW model how to count by 5’s on a clock to help determine the minute. TTW give students a
clock and have the students set clocks to specific times. TTW assist with any mistakes. IP: TSW choose
the correct time for each clock (Study Island). TTW review graphs by bringing students attention to the
parts of a graph and the key. TTW have students tell what each picture represents for each graph. (Ex.
Each
equals 2 doughnuts. TTW have students practice reading and interpreting the graphs after
circling the key for each graph. TTW assist with any corrections needed. TTW review fractions. TTW
model how to write, compare, and add/subtract fractions. TSW use fraction flash cards for review. TS’s
will have at least 2 sets of cards and tsw write the fraction for each set. TSW compare the cards in each
set and tsw add and subtract the fraction cards in each set. TTW assist the students with any corrections
needed.

Writing: Compare/Contrast; Cursive
Spelling Words: neck, bucket, locker, police, chase, erase, once, face, house, jacket
Vocabulary Words: avenue, ducklings, nest, pool, splash, spring
Phonics: TTW and TSW locate at least 4 /k/ sounds words in phonics reader “Earthquakes: What
Causes Them”. TSW write the words on index cards and make a sentence using the words. TS’s
will read each sentence to the class.
WRITING: SOL 3.10
TSW write cursive. TSW practice writing letters with down curve, under curve, slant, and loop
forward. TS and TTW check letters for correct joining of letters. TSW make any corrections. TSW
practice writing their names and days of the week (1st tracing and then independently).
Grammar: SOL 3.10 Pronouns TTW review how students can use pronouns in a sentence. TTW
write sentences on board and have students replace underlined words with pronouns. IP: TSW
choose 4 pronouns, write a sentence using the word and illustrate the words.
Reading: SOL 3.6a-f
TSW review the details from the story read the previous day. TTW ask students to make
predictions about the remaining details of the story. After making predictions, TTW continue to
read “Chibi, A True Story from Japan”. After the story, tt and tsw discuss story details. For
review of vocabulary words, ttw read sentences using a vocabulary word P.B. pg. 62.
Math:
SOL: 3.7, 3.12 decimals; 3.13 money; 3.23 probability
TTW review decimals, money, and probability. TTW model how to read shaded grids (tens,
hundreds) for writing decimals. TTW add/subtract the decimals after setting using grid lines. IP:
TSW write, add/subtract decimals after interpreting grid pictures. TSW review money using
coins. Each student will tell the value of each coin and add the sets of coins. After determining
value od each set of coins, tsw choose a peer and compare the two sets. TTW monitor and
check for accuracy. TTW model how to determine the occurrence of an object/event. TTW have
colored blocks in a bag and tsw will explain the likelihood of pulling each color out of the bag.
TTW respond making any corrections to ts’s response. TS’s will set up colored blocks to show if
the colors are certain, impossible, likely, unlikely to be pulled. TTW assist with the corrections
or misunderstandings.

Phonics: (switch to Math time due to testing) TSW practice identifying the /k/ sound in spelling
words by underlining the letter or letters that stand for the sound /k/ in each word read by
teacher. IP: TSW say the names of the pictures and write the missing letters (c, ck, ch) to
complete each word. TTW check for understanding and accuracy.
WRITING SOL 3.8
Math Testing
Grammar:
TSW distinguish between subject/object pronouns. TTW explain that when a pronoun is the
subject of a sentence, it is called a subject pronoun.TTW explain how pronouns that follow
verbs are object pronouns. TTW write sentences on board and have the student choose the
pronoun that best completes each sentence. TSW also identify if the pronoun is an
object/subject pronoun. IP: TSW match pronouns with phrases and circle pronouns that best
completes sentences P.B. pg. 109
Reading: (switch to math time due to benchmark testing) TSW take a vocabulary and
comprehension test for the story “Chibi, A True Story from Japan”.
