We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate
Miss Denise who has recently gained her BA in
Childhood Studies with distinction, and we are
delighted that she has returned to Derby Street
Nursery in the role of Depute Manager for the summer
period.
Thank you to all families who attended our recent
Sports Day. We were very lucky with the weather and
we hope you enjoyed it as we had lots of fun.
We would like to congratulate our school leavers for
putting on a wonderful Leaver’s Concert. The children
have blossomed since starting the Nursery and will be
missed by all staff and their friends.
We would like to congratulate Miss Lynn on her
appointment as Room Senior in the Daffodil Room.
Miss Maureen has attended recent Child Protection
training from Glasgow City Council and all staff will
be trained accordingly.
As part of our Eco Schools development work we
plan to build a plastic bottle green house. As you
can imagine this will mean a collection of a large
amount of bottles. Can we ask if you have any two
litre plastic drinks bottles could you please drop
them off to Miss Hazel in the Thistle Room.
Buttercup and Daisy Room
First of all we would like to say goodbye and good luck
to our friend Isla who is joining the Bluebell Room.
During the month of June we have been exploring our
sense of taste with lemons, limes, pineapple,
grapefruit, jelly and flavoured ice cubes. We were also
very busy making various props for our new story of
the month which is “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.”
We have enjoyed singing our song of the month “Little
Peter Rabbit” and participating in related experiences.
Our new song of the month for July is “Twinkle
Twinkle” which I’m sure you will agree is always a
favourite. And our story of the month is “Little Red
Riding Hood” which we cannot wait to explore. We
will also be continuing to have lots of fun taking part
in messy play with paint, bubbles and water.

Daffodil Room
Firstly we would like to welcome Yuxi, Clara and
Caolan to the Daffodil Room, we look forward to
many happy times together.
During the month of June we have been exploring
summer. We made a lovely summer themed wall
with collage buckets and spades, lentil starfish and
pasta sand castles. We also had lots of fun making
ice lollies and healthy fruit ice cream, we enjoyed
eating them too! We have also been exploring
letters and numbers in all areas of the playroom
through letter hunts in the sand, magnetic letters
and number boards, printing with foam letters and
numbers and letter and word matching games.
In the coming month we will be exploring holidays.
We would like to ask if parents could let staff know
where they may be going on holiday allowing us to
explore this further with the children. We would also
like to remind parents/carers that Terri is available
to jet off with you on holiday and we look forward to
seeing more of Mr sun in July.

We would like to welcome Isla, Elena and Yuhan to the
Thistle Room, we are very excited to have new friends
to play with. We have also said goodbye to our friends
Leonardo and Uxuri, we will miss them very much.
During the month of June we have been very busy, we
have put on a show for our friends who are going to
school. We did a review of our year so far, we told all
the mums and dads about the human body, our letters
and letter sounds, the number of syllables in our names
and we recited 2 poems. We learned a new song called
big school which Max taught us.
We also took part in 2 music sessions at the Kelvingrove
bandstand. During the first one we listened to a story,
sang some songs, had songs sung to us and watched
some tap dancing. During the second session we
listened to a string trio, there was a double bass, a cello
and a violin. We were treated to some French music,
the 3 little pigs story and we danced to some Scottish
music. Much fun was had by all the children who
attended.
The children have been showing a keen interest in birds,
we have so far explored a nest, bird watched in the
garden, tried building our own nests, visited the Art
Galleries to see the bird display and discussed our
favourite birds and what we would like to learn about
birds.
Our new poem of the month for July is called Snail, we
are looking forward to investigating this further.
In the coming month we are going to continue to
explore birds, investigate the rhyming words in our new
poem, check our bug hotel for visitors and continue to
enjoy our bingo and domino games.
Our latest meeting was very successful and well
attended I would like to thank everyone who came
along, contributed their time and ideas making it a very
enjoyable meeting.
The biggest news to report is we have finally managed
to secure recycling bins from the council, with much
help from Philip Braat. This is very exciting news as the
whole nursery and all the children will be now be able to
participate in recycling.
We have sent in our Here We Grow application form to
Dobbies to try and secure some help, advice and money
to develop our allotment and garden areas further, we
will keep you updated on any progress. We are also in
the process of contacting Sainsburys for community
funding for the same purpose.
Our garden is a haven for growing again this year and
we have broad beans, peas, a cucumber, strawberries
and various herbs and plants, we also have an orange
tree! We are very much looking forward to harvesting
and eating our vegetables. A very big thank you must
go to Peter again who has invested much time and
effort into making the garden look beautiful and looked
after, we greatly appreciate all the spare time that is
invested in supporting the nursery’s Eco Schools
endeavours.
