Flashback – How did Rainbow Fish use The 7 Habits?
I can . . .
1. be a good listener
2. identify that there are two sides to every conflict/situation.
Teach: 1. Review I Care Rules 1-5 Habits 1-4, 6 and Kelso’s Wheel
2. Discuss Habit 5: Seek first to Understand then to be Understood and what this means
3. Focus on trying to understand and be understood in conflict situations- this means showing EMPATHY
Activity: 1. Read the story, The 3 Little Pigs and Discuss
2. Read the True Story of the 3 Little Pigs and Discuss
3. Use the “Talking Stick” to share about the stories
Exit slip: Define EMPATHY

I can . . .
1. be a good listener and show empathy which is truly understanding how another feels.
2. identify that there are two sides to every conflict/situation that needs to be heard and
understood.
Teach: 1. Review Habits 1-4, 6 and Kelso’s Wheel
**** Any part of lesson from last week that was not completed will be completed.
2. Discuss Habit 5: Seek first to Understand then to be Understood and what this means. How could it help in a
bully situation?
3. Define EMPATHY- truly understanding how another feels.
Activity: 1. Read the story, You are Special and Discuss
2. Use the “Talking Stick” for questioning/ comments
3. Discuss Indian Adage: “ You never understand how a man feels until you walk a mile in his shoes. “
4. Shoe Activity- Write a way that you can show empathy to others then decorate your shoe.
Exit slip: Completion of a sentence on the “shoe” that shows knowledge gained of meaning of term empathy.

I can . . .

2. identify that there are two sides to every conflict/situation that needs to be heard and
understood.
Teach: 1. Review Habits 1-4, 6 and Kelso’s Wheel

2. Discuss Communication and types of communication. Why is it so important?
3. Discuss the role of “listening” in communication and share with students the Chinese character for “to listen”
4. Define EMPATHY- truly understanding how another feels.
5. Discuss Habit 5: Seek first to Understand then to be Understood and what this means.
Activity: 1. Prezi on Empathy
2. Activity: Verbal Blind Drawing. Students sit back to back with one person giving instructions on how to draw the
picture they are holding. Discuss; then switch and discuss how it was different. Introduce ‘talking stick’ if needed.
Exit slip: Completion of a one paragraph reaction to the activity today on how they can show more empathy in future
situations.
