Postdoctoral Fellow, Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. A postdoctoral position is available within the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases. The CIHR- and APRI-funded research project in Dr. David Westaway’s laboratory concerns the pathogenesis of infectious prion disease and biochemical processes that overlap those of Alzheimer’s Disease. The work will focus upon proteostatic pathways within neurons and build upon recent publications on the chemistry of the cellular prion protein and the related shadoo protein (Westaway et al PLoS Pathogens, 7 (e1002391), 2011; Daude et al PNAS 109: 9035-40, 2012; Mays et al, J. Clin. Invest.124, 847-858, 2014; Lau et al EMBO Mol Med 2015, in press). The University of Alberta hires on the basis of merit and the successful candidate will have a strong background in biochemistry, molecular genetics and cell biological techniques as proven by peer-reviewed publications. Prior experience with primary neuronal cultures will be advantageous. The University of Alberta is committed to the principle of equity in employment. We welcome diversity and encourage applications from all qualified women and men, including persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and Aboriginal persons. The Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases is located within the Brain and Aging Research Building; it is a multidisciplinary centre with state-of-the art instrumentation and encompasses six laboratories studying different facets of neurodegenerative disease and aging. The University of Alberta is a Top 5 Canadian university and one of the Top 100 in the world, home to more than 170 graduate programs, 200 undergraduate programs and 450 active student groups. It is located in Edmonton, a city with one million residents and having one of Canada's strongest economies. The University of Alberta has grown and thrived in step with Edmonton for more than 100 years.
