“The prevalence of HIV/AIDS is very high in some countries, but these countries are so far away; why should I be
concerned? How would this affect me and anyway, what can I do about it?”
How does the AOI provide a focus for the question?
HSE – World AIDS day is December 1st and unit builds towards this. Students consider impact of sexually transmitted diseases and use of contraceptives in
this context. Unit focuses on menstrual cycle and use of hormones as a contraceptive.

1. Introduce guiding question and determine and counter
misconceptions about AIDS.
Learning Experiences and Teaching Strategies (Formative assessments included)
Use the HIV Facts Quiz and lesson plan. Ask one of the students who went to Romanian orphanages to
come and talk to class about their experiences and reflect on the guiding question. Complete the Spreading
of AIDS activity.

handouts of the hormones. Must complete a step by step summary of the cycle.
Complete Assessment Task on Data Analysis of Hormone Changes and temperature during menstrual cycle.
6. Understand the role of hormones for contraception and
fertility treatment and Understand the importance of
barrier contraceptives to avoid sexually transmitted
diseases.
Provide students with information from a packet of contraceptive pills, summaries of controlling fertility
and other applications of hormones. They should make summary notes and answer discussion questions.
Complete worksheet on other forms of contraceptives.
7. To understand the impact of AIDS around the world and
how where you live can determine the impact this disease
has on society.
Introduce the One World Assignment, explain tasks – in class time will be given for preparation and writing
of the essay.
