Summer in Suffolk Whether you are a lark supporter and waiting on the shore in Felixstowe, or wondering what is about if the sailing gets postponed then read on, there is a lot to do in Suffolk........ Weekend of 27th & 28th July is the Sausage and Beer festival at Jimmy’s (Doherty of TV fame) Farm. 20 minute drive from Felixstowe the event runs from 12 - 6 both days. With live music and lots of food and beer as well as kids’ entertainment it should be fun. Tickets and more info from www.jimmysfarm.com Situated a bike ride / decent walk from the sailing is Landguard Fort, it is the site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England in 1667 and the first land battle of the Royal Marines. The current fort was built in the 18th century. It is owned by English Heritage as are Framlingham and Orford Castles, both situated in pretty market towns half an hour from Felixstowe. Framlingham Castle has a Knight and Princess School on this week. More info at www.english-heritage.org.uk Sutton Hoo is at the top of the navigable Deben Estuary and the site of one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time, the ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king and his treasured possessions. On Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th July you can meet a merchant trader from afar who imports valuable items bound for the King and discover all about Anglo-Saxon trading and its role in the creation of the Sutton Hoo treasures. Plus woodcarving, leather and metalwork demonstrations. More details from www.nationaltrust.org.uk If you want something more adventurous and want to learn to sail so you can compete next year, or windsurf, or want your children to learn then courses are being run at Alton Water reservoir www.altonwater.co.uk or Waldringfield Sailing Club www.waldringfieldsc.com Or you could canoe up the Alde, hire available from Iken Barns, prepare to get muddy! If you prefer horses Poplar Park www.poplarpark.co.uk is just the other side or the river, a ferry and cycle ride away. Of Golf, on the doorstep is Felixstowe Ferry golf club then there is Waldringfield, Ufford Park, Seckford Hall, Woodbridge...... Felixstowe is a typical seaside town with 2p machines, crazy golf, cinema, leisure centre with Swimming Pool and the charity and pound shops to help kit you out for fancy dress night..... Woodbridge, Aldeburgh and further afield Colchester and Bury St Edmunds are good places for a wander, coffee, visit to the park, castle or Abbey Gardens. There are lots of good local walks, cycle rides and pubs about, maps available from the club and recommendations from the locals will be readily available. So there is a lot to do both on and off the water. Give Felixstowe a try, the competition will be great on the water, the socials great off the water and there is a lot to do for the families too.
