Big paper/Posterboard x 2 with a 3 way Venn Diagram drawn on

Objectives:

Students will be able to navigate a newspaper on their own.

Students will be able to compare and contrast local, national, and international newspapers.

Anticipatory Set:

To begin class, we will distribute one newspaper to each student.

We will write SILENT EXPLORATION TIME up on the board and allow students to explore and read the newspaper they have for 10 minutes! o This should hopefully get students interested while giving them enough time to explore something they rarely come in contact with.

Procedure:

After students have had time to read and explore their newspapers, we will come together as a large group to discuss the following questions: o Describe to us what your newspaper was like? o What did you find the most interesting? The least interesting? o Was this the first time you ever spent 10 minutes reading a newspaper? o Do you think you are now more likely to pick up a newspaper and read?

Afterward, we will break students into 2 groups with each group having at least one student with a local, national, and international news source. o Students will have 15 minutes to compare and contrast their newspapers before creating a 3 way Venn Diagram on a large sheet of paper (like poster board) in their groups.

Once students have had adequate time to complete this, we will come together as a large group to share students’ ideas about the differences and similarities between local, national, and international newspapers.

Conclusion:

To conclude class and check for student understanding we will ask students to write the title of an article we will then share with the class. Classmates will guess whether it belongs in a local, national, or international newspaper.

Scissors

Objectives:

Students will be able to identify the various types of entries in Newspapers: features, columns, articles, editorials, obituaries, classified ads, comics/games.

Students will be able to summarize the qualities that make up an entry of a specific type and cut out examples of that type of article from one of the several newspapers we have in class.

Anticipatory Set:

As a warm-up, I will write three different headlines up on the board and students will have to decide if each would appear in a local, national, or international newspaper.

o “The Iron Pigs Win Again: Allentown Goes Hog Wild” o “U.S. Census Results Show Growing Latino Population” o “Terrorism in Europe Likelihood Increasing”

Procedure:

1.

Picking up where we left off last time, students will pick up the newspaper they had last time for some silent exploration time again. a.

For the next 10 minutes, students will begin exploring their newspapers for a certain type of newspaper entry we will assign them: features, columns, articles, editorials, obituaries, classified ads, comics/games. i.

Each student will have a different entry type. b.

5 minutes into their exploration, we will pass out scissors and ask students to find examples of their type of newspaper entry they particularly like and to cut them out! c.

After 10 minutes have passed total, we will ask students to switch newspapers. i.

Students will look through the new newspaper they have for 5 minutes again reading and cutting out an article they enjoy. ii.

Repeat, pass newspapers, another 5 minutes, another article cutout. d.

Next, we will come together as a big group to talk about the following discussion questions:

i.

What makes a ________ (type of entry)_____ special? ii.

What did you cut out? Why did you pick the ones you did? e.

With roughly 10 minutes remaining, students will label the sections of a pre-drawn on poster board (divided into 7 sections of various shapes/sizes) with their entry type and glue on their articles!!! We will also ask students to write a one sentence description of their type of newspaper entry in their section of the poster board.

Conclusion:

To conclude our lesson, I will ask students to attempt to write on a sheet of paper one Newspaper story idea relating to Summerbridge for each of the different newspaper entries we talked about today in class! o We will inform them we might end up actually using these!
