Becoming Our Nominated Charity
1. How would you spend a £2000-£3000 donation from Queen Mary Students’ Union RAG?
If Barts Charity were a nominated charity, the RAG committee could choose the exact fund or appeal they
would like their donation to support. Due to our endowment, we do not deduct admin costs and so 100% of all
donations received go directly to a cause of the donor’s choice.
An example area to support would be our Barts Kids Bones Appeal. Every year our leading children’s hospital
provides exceptional care for over 15,000 babies, children and adolescents affected by bone and joint conditions
which cause severe disability and decrease quality of life. From kids with genetic conditions such as hip dysplacia
to unforseen trauma from road accidents to playground falls.
The Orthopaedic Team at the Royal London would decide how a donation was spent depending on their clinical
needs. Recently, a £2,000 donation allowed us to provide a silent saw to put children at ease during the removal
of their casts.
2. What (if any) Challenges, Raids and Events are you planning to run in 2015-16 which Queen
Mary Students’ Union RAG students could get involved with and participate in? (i.e. runner
places in London Marathon)
In 2015-16 we are planning to run the following events:







London Marathon
London to Paris Cycle
Santa Run
Hackney Half Marathon
British 10K
Kilimanjaro Trek
Skydives
3. What ideas do you have on how you could interact with our students and RAG run events?
We run annual Christmas and Easter appeals to raise funds and donations of Gifts in Kind for the
children at the Royal London, Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals. Students can get involved in
volunteering opportunities that arise from these appeals, such as gift wrapping sessions.
4. RAG are likely to choose up to 2 charities ranging from local to international charities. What
(if any) projects or campaigns do you conduct in East London and/or Tower Hamlets?
We are a dedicated charity for the hospitals of Barts Health NHS Trust and QMUL Barts and the London School
of Medicine and Dentistry. As such all projects we fund benefit primarily patients and wider community of
North East London (City of London, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Newham) serving a diverse
community, including some of the most deprived areas in the UK.
We also support patients with rare conditions from across the UK who travel for specialist care, for example,
the Royal London Hospital receives patients with Retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer, from as far away
as Ireland.
5. Any additional information you would like to add?
Barts Charity already have a relationships with Project Play, a volunteering programme run via the
Volunteering Service at QMUL.
We were also a nominated charity for Barts and the London medical school for 2014-15, and have an
on-going relationship with Barts and the London Asian Society (BLAS), therefore we have prior
experience of working with RAG/student groups.
