RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
Area of Research
Objectives: To delineate the mechanisms of alcoholic pancreatitis and liver disease and develop
their biomarkers for early detection and prevention.
Approach: Major focus of my research program is to understand the metabolic basis of alcoholic
pancreatitis and liver disease, and to delineate their underlying mechanism(s). Our studies indicate
that one of the primary targets of alcohol toxicity in the pancreas as well in the liver is lipid
metabolism which can result into inflammation with or without fibrosis. Using hepatic alcohol
dehydrogenase-deficient deer mouse model, which mimics a metabolic condition observed in
chronic alcoholic patients, we found that metabolism of ethanol in the livers and alcohol levels in
the body are the determining factors in ethanol-induced pancreatic and hepatic injury. We are
using lipid metabolomic and proteomic approaches, and pathways’ analysis to delineate the
underlying mechanism(s) of alcoholic pancreatitis and hepatitis, and develop their early
biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
