World War II Britain went to war with Germany when Hitler invaded Poland in September 1939. Adolf Hitler was the German leader and Winston Churchill was the British prime minister. During the war, German fighter planes bombed British towns and cities to destroy war machinery being built there. This was called an air raid. When there was an air raid, people tried to keep safe in air-raid shelters away from the bombing. Many children (evacuees) were sent away (evacuated) to the countryside where they would be safe.
