Admiral Nelson and Hardy attend Gala Dinner The Royal British Club Golfing Society celebrated the end of the season with a magnificent Gala Dinner held at the Hotel Miragem in Cascais. Apart from the presentations of yearly prizes – and the President’s Baffy and D’Arcy Orders Cup competitions which were played on the day – members were treated to a visit from Admiral Nelson and Hardy explaining the Health and Safety Rules in today’s world. Ably played by the Captain, Selwyn Kennard, and Ron Goddard the audience enjoyed the spoof sketch with laughter and great applause. Members with early starting time were treated to a beautiful sunrise before setting off in weather which was warmer than recently. The large list of winners included the day’s game of the presentation of the President’s Baffy which was won by Fernando Oliveira with a score of 37 points, closely followed by Hans Muhlenbeck with 36 and Harley Barnard with 34. Fourth, fifth and sixth prizes all had to be decided on a countback with Sakiko Takeda gaining fourth place, Ron Goddard fifth and Isabel Nygren sixth. The D’Arcy Orders Cup, for the best Gross Score, was won by Ron Goddard. The Newstead Cup – for members over 19 handicap and not in the first six prize winners – went to Lars Nygren who also took home a new Prize awarded to members with handicap of over 28. Nearest the Pin for the Ladies was Patricia Westheimer and the Nearest the Pin was won by David Jackson who just managed to get inside the shot of Chris Goulding which seemed to be the likely winner at the time. Guest Prizes – Ladies to Cora Flaherty and Men to David Wright and this month’s Cow Bell went to John Dunsmore. The Annual Prizes for 2013: the Graham Paine Memorial Trophy Order of Merit First prize Ron Goddard, 2nd Teresa Negrao and Third Teresa Mulhenbeck. The Dai Evans Trophy for the Gross Eclectic: first Ron Goddard, second Ewan Rankin and third Mark Dawson (two members who are the Society’s long standing sponsors). The Alan Jones Trophy for Net Eclectic – first Hans Muhlenbeck, second Eddie Leitao and third Max Zimmerli. Next Year’s Captain, Eddie Leitao, thanked this year’s Captain for an outstanding job and said that he hoped members would continue to support the Society and had the pleasure of announcing that the Vice Captain for 2014 is Andrew Jones – yet another Chartered Accountant keeping the Society’s books in order! The first competition of 2014 will be held at Estoril Golf Course on February 5th, playing for the John Bull Cup followed by lunch at the John Bull in Cascais. The gourmet dinner produced by the Miragem Hotel and the excellent organization by the Captain – including the entertainment – made a very successful evening for all. Brenda Leitao
