Classroom Guidelines

A. Preparation for class:
1. Be punctual. Do not waste time in the halls with friends
1st occurrence-teacher warning
2nd occurrence-teacher warning & teacher assigns consequence
3rd occurrence-teacher assigns consequence, parent advised of potential office referral
4th occurrence-VP assigns consequence, parent advised of potential send home
5th occurrence-student sent home, parent advised of future conference and/or suspension
2. Go directly to your seat. Open your text and notebook to the last days class.
3. Bring all required materials to class with you. (Textbook, notebook, writing utensils, calculator, ruler)
4. Wear the full McCarthy uniform each day.
1st occurrence-sent to office, VP contacts parent, warning of potential send home
2nd occurrence-sent to office, VP contacts parent, sent home
5. No hats!
1st occurrence-sent to office, VP keeps hat for a day
2nd occurrence-sent to office, VP keeps hat for a week (or weekend if Friday)
3rd occurrence-sent to office, VP contacts parent, sent home
B. During Class:
1. Pay attention: do not talk during instruction, nor while other students are speaking.
2. Language Use: foul or offensive language is not permitted.
3. Remain in your seat: at all times, unless otherwise instructed.
4. Respect the rights of all individuals in the room.
5. Work quietly on in-class seatwork on Science only.
C. Class Behaviour:
1. General lecture:
2. Labs:
- proper polite behaviour is expected at all times
- raise your hand to speak
- drinks and food are not permitted: the consequence is a detention of
desk clean up
- all labs are considered safe under orderly conditions but danger can arise with
disorderly conditions. Any student who creates a dangerous situation during a lab will
not be permitted to participate in the lab and receive a mark of 0%
D. Class Absence:
If a student misses class it is their responsibility to make up the class work. If you know you will be
away ask the teacher for the work the day you leave.
You are still responsible for the work and homework on days you are absent. Thus if there is a
homework check the day you come back you are responsible to have it complete.

E. Homework, Assignments, Labs, Tests, and Quizzes
1. Homework: will be assigned every day and generally checked at the beginning of the period.
If HW is not done 3 times you will receive a detention afterschool.
Another additional 3 times will be a detention and a phone call home.
An Additional 3 times will be determine per student… (Not good!!)
2. Due dates: a primary and closure date will be assigned for each piece of work. If work has not been
handed in by the closure date a mark of 0% will be assigned.
3. Missed Tests/Quizzes/Quests: All tests are to be written on the assigned date. If a student is
absence a note from a parent must accompany them upon return (different from the
office note) or a phone call to Mrs.Chittenden.
4. Mark Book Summaries: A summary will be handed out periodically through the semester these must
be signed by a guardian by 3 days after they are handed out. If not there will call be
a phone call home.
F. Care of School Property
1. Textbook: this is the property of the school. Damage costs may be issued.
2. Classroom: Keep the room tidy. Do not write on the desks, nor leave garbage in them.
G. Extra Help: Mrs. Chittenden is available after school on certain days of the week for questions or on lunch
3C. Please let her know you are coming for extra help.
H. Cell phones/Music Devices: are NOT permitted to be used in the class nor are they to even used in the
school. See your planner for the PED policy.
Your Science Notebook
A science notebook properly kept, will be a valued asset in helping you to study for tests and the final examination.
Follow the following guidelines to maintain your science notebook:
1. Binder
a. You must use a 3-ringed binder
b. Keep the binder neat and well organized
c. Always have extra paper available in your binder

a. You are to have 4 dividers to organize your notebook. On the tabs write:
Unit 1 ~ Chemical Reactions
Unit 2 ~ Light and Geometric Optics
Unit 3 ~ Tissues, Organs and Systems of Living Things
Unit 4 ~ Climate Change
