This course is designed for non-native speakers of English and aims
 to raise awareness of the linguistic features of expository texts
 to enable students to read expository and persuasive texts
 to raise awareness of how writers position themselves towards their audience
 to raise awareness of the linguistic features of persuasive texts
 to further develop awareness of the strategies writers can use to position themselves towards their audience
 to develop the ability to think critically about sources and presentation of information

This course is designed for non-native speakers of English
Textual resources in English: paragraph structure, textual coherence, implicit signalling of rhetorical functions
Reading skills and strategies: decode densely written texts, recognise author viewpoint, draw inferences and conclusions, evaluate texts in terms of stated or implied
purpose, identify positive or negative viewpoints
Writing skills and strategies: summarise & evaluate texts, record vocabulary, grammar and organisation of expository texts, relate text to numerical data, summarise
persuasive texts, bibliographic conventions, evaluate and write arguments
Text types:
expository, compare & contrast, define & classify, comment on data, link cause & effect; multifunctional texts (essays and projects),
persuasive: problems and solutions, linking evidence to conclusions, arguments

identify a variety of rhetorical functions in a single text and understand how these contribute to the overall purpose of the text
begin to analyse how an author’s viewpoint is expressed in texts
analyse the organisation, lexis and grammar of a variety of persuasive texts in order to use these as models for their own writing
identify the implicit signalling of rhetorical functions such as problems and solutions in a text and summarise the text to make these functions
