4.1 PHYSICAL FEATURES
 Thiruthangal Nadar College, one of the most reputed and disciplined college, is
located in North Chennai. The College Campus provides a congenial atmosphere for
students with its lush green surrounds. To promote education in the backward area,
the college was founded by Chennaivazh Thiruthangal Hindu Nadar Uravinmurai
Dharma fund on 3rd August 1997 in a sprawling area of 9.76 acres of land. A
compound wall enclosing the total area of 18000 Sq.ft was constructed along with the
building. The College provides higher education at a moderate cost without any
discrimination of caste or creed.
 The College had a humble start as an Arts and Science College for men. Later it was
extended and transformed to a co-educational institution from the academic year 20022003.
 Today it has nearly 10 acres of land area and 1,22,000 sq. ft of built – up area.
 TNC has various blocks as divided into the well furnished class rooms, central library
with internet facilities, Commerce, Corporate block, Computer Labs, A/c Conference
Hall, Health Clinic, Vast Ground for various games and a Hygienic Canteen.
 The College auditorium which is named as M.G.Erulankudi Nadar and E.Valliammal
Auditorium is used for conducting academic and non academic programmes of the
college. An open auditorium is built in the name of Perunthalaivar Kamarajar which
also caters to the cultural needs of the students.
 The college provides transport facilities for girls from various points and ensures they
reach the college safely on time.
4.1.1. INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT
The details of infrastructure development in our college.
 At present Thiruthangal Nadar College have well furnished blocks - the Main Block,
Commerce Block, Kamarajar Block Corporate Block. Besides this, a block is under
construction to address the needs of the students for a spacious lab and additional class
rooms.
 Each block has well furnished class rooms with good ventilation.

 The college has a very well-equipped library, computer laboratories, rooms for sports
materials and well planned sports grounds for outdoor games. Well- equipped rooms
are also available for Indoor games.
 To cater to the needs of the students from all disciplines, job-oriented courses are
introduced.

4.1.3. What is the policy of the institution?
This institution has the policy to promote education to the downtrodden pupil for the
upliftment of their life and the society. For this purpose TNC has the following facilities.
 It has good and trained teaching and non-teaching faculty
 Very well furnished class rooms with good ventilation.
 It provides purified drinking water facilities in each block
 Focusing on the hygiene, the college provides good sanitary facilities.
 To kindle the knowledge of the students it offers well equipped library and
laboratories.
 Placement cell provides job opportunities to the students.
 The college has a good canteen which provides clean and neat food service.
 The college provides good transport facilities with buses, mini buses, van and a car.
 It has well furnished Auditorium with a capacity of 1000 seats.
 The department of Physical Education under the guidance of the Principal provides
rigorous practice to the students.
4.1.4. Health related support services for teaching faculty and non teaching staff
A health clinic with two beds is available within the college campus to provide health care to
support the students. The lady doctor appointed is responsible for this clinic. Regular OP is
available in the working hours of the college. The doctor not only provides treatment to the
needy but also conducts various camps for screening cancer, anaemia, dental carries, and eye
checkups. General health camps are organized to detect diabetics, women related health
issues etc in co-ordination with the NSS unit of the college and various leading hospitals of
Chennai city. The Doctor also conducts seminars/lectures for creating awareness on health in
general.
4.1.5. Sports: Indoor and Outdoor games
Special facilities are available in the campus to promote interest in sports and cultural
events
First year undergraduate students are encouraged and motivated to take part in Sports
and Games and extra extracurricular activities. The physical education department maintains
both indoor and outdoor games. It has a well maintained ground for various outdoor games
like kabbadi, volley ball, ball badminton, football, hand ball, kho kho, cricket and athletics

chess, table tennis and badminton. A Spacious playground has been exclusively allotted for
girls to encourage their all round participation.
The director of physical education and Asst. Directress of physical education provide
coaching and training for various games which are made available for the students by the
physical education department. In order to enhance the team spirit and to preserve a unique
identity a distinct uniform is provided to all the sports teams. The sports students can avail
financial and technical support from college sport funds to participate in the State and
National level tournaments. The sports ground of the college is used for conducting university
tournaments.
The college has a big ground to conduct Annual Sports day. Students and staff are
encouraged to take part in various sports events. To encourage the sporting spirit of the
student participation, the winners and participants are given prizes and certificates on Annual
sports day. The department of Physical education encourages the various departments to
conduct Inter-departmental tournaments for sports activities.
4.1.6. Cultural Activities
Facilities available in the college campus to promote interest in cultural events.
The college has well furnished auditorium for all cultural events. To explore the
inherent and hidden talents of the first year students, the freshers’ day is celebrated in full
vigour. The first year students are encouraged to exhibit their talents on the stage. All the
departments are conducting various socio-cultural feasts for their department students.
The college conducts cultural programmes in the college auditorium under the
guidance of the faculty in charge for cultural activities. Student representatives are in charge
for disseminating the message related to inter and intra college cultural events to the students.
The information related to cultural events is displayed on the notice board.



4.1.8. Details of infrastructure for extra-curricular activities:
 Extra Curricular Activities
To concentrate on students extracurricular activities, the college conducts sports events,
indoor and outdoor games, auditorium, NSS, RRC, public speaking, communication skills
development, classes on health and hygiene, yoga, cultural events and many healthy
competitions.
Physical education is an integral part of the curriculum. The college provides good
opportunities for students to develop and exhibit their sports talent. The sports activities are
cared by a full time physical director under the direct control of the Principal.

4.1.9. How does the institution plan and ensure that the available infrastructure is in line
with its academic growth and is optimally utilized?
 The college takes adequate steps to enhance infrastructure to promote teachinglearning environment. It has the required infrastructure, with various facilities.
 The College building meets all the mandatory requirements of safety and security.
Proper certification is sought from the competent authorities for the stability of the
building, fire safety and sanitation.
 The management ensures proper allocation and utilization of funds towards purchase,
construction and maintenance of buildings, furniture and equipments
 Whenever a new course is introduced, the Management provides the necessary
infrastructure for the program via classrooms, laboratories, computers and adequate
books, journals and furniture. Thus the growth of the infrastructure has kept pace with
the academic growth of the institution.
 The college has three blocks namely main block, commerce block and Kamarajar
block with all the amenities provided for the students to develop academically and
personally.
There are 53 classrooms, conference hall, and seminar hall with
projectors, computer labs and a multimedia lab.
 To function the college in an efficient manner, equipments of standard quality have
been installed .High speed internet access through WIFI connectivity and LAN facility
has been provided to all the departments, library, Auditorium and Conference hall.
 Multi-functional copier machines and printers have been installed in the administrative
office and also in the examination cell to meet the printing requirements including Hall
tickets, model Question Papers, Mark sheets, Attendance sheets etc.
 Resources are shared by different departments. Classrooms/halls are made available
for conducting co-curricular/extra-curricular programmes.

4.1.11. How does the institution ensure that the infrastructure facilities meet the
requirements of the students with physical disabilities?
The institution is sensitive to the special needs of the students who are physically
challenged. A proposal has been put forward and a ramp service will be provided for disabled
students.
4.1.12. Give details on the residential facilities and various provisions available within
them Hostel facility.
The college does not have a residential facility for faculty and students. However, the
management gives information about nearby facilities to students who require
accommodation. The college provides transport facilities for girls to commute to and fro from
college.
4.1.13. What are the provisions made available to students and staff in terms of health
care in the campus and off the campus?
The institution takes utmost care of the physical and mental health of the faculty and
students and it gives utmost priority to provide health care services at the campus. Some of
the initiatives undertaken by the management are
 Well-stocked First-aid kits and emergency medical kit available in every block.
 Medical insurance policy is provided for faculty and students.
 Awareness about health education, first aid and safety measures is imparted through
periodically organized programmes.
 The college has adequate number of Ancillary staff to take care of the cleanliness and
hygiene aspects of the college building and its surroundings.
 Coolers provided for clean drinking water.
 Fire safety demos are periodically conducted for awareness on safety measures during
emergency situations.
 First Aid Training programme is given to all first year students
 College Vehicle/Hospital Ambulance is used for emergency cases.
4.2. Library as a learning resource
TNC has a modern and well furnished library housed in a space of 2000 sq.ft with
7,318 books, 50 per periodicals besides newspapers and journals. To enrich the habit of

utilizing the library, the management has allotted sizable funds every year to purchase the new
arrivals of books, magazines etc.
4.2.1. How does the library have an advisory committee? What?
The college has a Library Advisory Committee with experienced members of staff as
its members. The library Advisory Committee meets once in a semester to discuss and decide
on the following library related matters:
 Provision of display racks for latest arrivals of books and magazines and
journals.
 Announcement of latest arrivals through notice board.
 Increasing the book loan facility from one to three books per students per
week.
 Provision of reprographic facility to cater to the needs of users.
 Provision of internet to cater to learner needs.
 Provision of UPS backup to library in case of power outage.
 Provision of Comfortable seating arrangements to provide ease while reading.
 Increase in number of racks to accommodate increased number of books and
volumes.

Library – Student/User friendly
The library facilities reflect the policy of the management to provide student friendly
amenities which can be seen from the following initiatives:
 Open access system to enable the students to locate the books easily.
 Library is partially automated to enable easy access of research resources.
 Books are issued Bar code ID.
 A separate reference section is provided to facilitate students and faculty members
involved in research activities.
 New arrivals are displayed in a separate rack.
 Volumes of various journals are made available for research and project work.
 Display of information in the library notice board regarding summer courses, short
term projects in various organizations, competitive exams, articles of academic
relevance which are published in daily news papers and periodicals and new arrivals of
magazines and journals.

in searching for books, periodical, database in library. The Library staff is responsible for
issue and return of books. They also ensure that the university question papers are made
available to the staff and students for reference. Students are briefed from time to time by the
Librarian with regard to the library rules.
4.2.9. Does the library get the feedback from its users? How is it analyzed and used for
improving the library services.
 Library feedback is obtained as part of the general feedback obtained by the
College at the end of every semester from the students.

 The feedback received in the library category is tabled at the Library Advisory
Committee meeting and deliberated upon for follow up action to be initiated.
 A strategic solution for the effective utilization of the library is then formulated
by the Advisory Committee.
 Library Committee also obtains informal feedback for the improvement of the
library.
4.2.10. List the infrastructural development of the library over the last four years?
(2009-2013)
1. New Building has been allotted for digital library.
2. Four Computer systems have been added for digital library.
3. Updated library software installed with OPAC facility.
4. Bar code Printer and Reader have been provided for library management.
5. Cupboards have been provided for books arrangements.
6. Five racks have been provided for periodicals, journals and new arrivals.
4.2.11. Did the library organize workshops for students, teachers, non-teaching staff of
the college to facilitate better usage?
 The library has not yet conducted orientation programmes for the students. But the
college proposes to conduct the orientation programmes for the students to orient them
on various resources and facilities in the library.
 The college plans to conduct a special programme for faculty and non-teaching staff,
on facilities of library and the use of software.
4.3. IT INFRASTRUCTURE
The IT policy of the College is formulated with the main vision of using the
technology to benefit both the faculty and students. The confidential details are maintained by
the administrative office and on need shared with the Heads of the Department through LAN
facility.

 Increasing the number of computers to enable the students to spend more time
effectively on computer learning.
4.3.3. Access to the faculty to prepare computer aided teaching – learning materials.
Teachers are encouraged to prepare computer aided teaching-learning materials.
Teachers can prepare their computer aided teaching-learning materials either in their
respective departments or in the computer Lab. The Conference hall is provided with a LCD
projector for presentation.
4.3.4. Maintenance of computers and their accessories
The departments make necessary arrangements for the maintenance of computers and
their accessories.
The Computer Science Department uses the stationery fund for the
maintenance of computers. The head of the departments of Computer Science and Computer
Application provide guidelines and help for the maintenance of Computers and their
accessories.
4.3.5. Provision made in the annual budget for update, deployment and maintenance of
the computer in the college.
Every year college collects list of requirements from all the departments. The consolidated
report related to the annual budget of the college in conveyed to the Management. The
management decides and allocates budget for the purchasing of computers and their
maintenance.

4.4.2. What are the institutional mechanisms for maintenance and upkeep of the
infrastructure, facilities and equipment of the college?
 All Heads of the Departments maintain a stock register for available equipments,
chairs and writing desks. Inter-departmental audits of the stock are conducted at the
end of every year and audit report is presented to the management.
 Any civil and electrical works undertaken are monitored by the maintenance
supervisor periodically and the report is submitted to the Secretary who directs all the
repair works.
 Budget for maintenance is prepared by the management for every academic year.
 Separate UPS and battery rooms are monitored by supervisors.
 Water coolers for the students are cleaned at regular intervals by the ancillary staff and
report and to the maintenance supervisor.
 Lush green campus is cleaned every morning and evening by the ancillary staff.
 Whitewashing is done periodically to give a face lift for the institution.
 The security services are outsourced by the College.
 To ensure the safety and security of the campus, the college is under central
surveillance with the installation of CCTV cameras at several locations in campus.
 Proper fire safety measures are taken with the installation of Fire Extinguishers.
 There is a backup Generator and UPS for supplying electricity in case of power failure
to the entire campus.
 Furniture is maintained and replaced whenever necessary.
 College car and motorbike are available for official transportation.
4.4.3. How and with what frequency does the institution take up calibration and other
precision measures for the equipment/instruments?
The institution does not have any scientific instruments that need calibration.
However, all the computer systems are updated with necessary software and hardware
whenever required.
4.4.4. What are the major steps taken for location, upkeep and maintenance of sensitive
equipment(voltage fluctuations , constant supply of water etc)?
 The college has necessary step-up voltage stabilizer/UPS for the computers and air
conditioners. Separate UPS and battery rooms are monitored regularly by supervisors.
 All necessary pre-maintenance/ scheduled maintenance are carried out periodically.
 Metro water is acquired to ensure perennial water supply. Water coolers are installed
at different blocks in the campus to provide drinking water.
