POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER MUSIC EDUCATION AND PEDAGOGY PURPOSE STATEMENT: The purpose of the role is to enhance the learning and qualifications outcomes of New Zealand School of Music students and the scholarly and research outputs and standing of the School by undertaking an effective programme of teaching, research and publication; undertaking post-graduate research supervision; and by providing administrative and professional service to the university and the broader academic, professional and general communities. The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer Music Education and Pedagogy is responsible for: Coordinating all NZSM pre-tertiary programmes and developing and strengthening links between NZSM and Secondary Schools. Fostering educational opportunities for NZSM tertiary level students through this engagement at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, through programme development and the development of curricular and extracurricular programmes. Delivering classes around education and pedagogy; contribute further teaching in area of expertise. Facilitating and leading the development of alternative modes of learning and engagement including across the Jazz Foundation Programme, the Young Musicians Programme and distance learning across all NZSM courses. Reviewing and developing the Jazz Foundation Programme in relation to the comprehensive needs of pre-tertiary training for all NZSM Programmes (including classical performance and composition). Leading and coordinating the Young Musicians Programme effectively including developing links with postgraduate programmes to provide pedagogical training opportunities for postgraduate students. Reviewing and developing community involvement links, exploring international best practice in linking service to schools into a pedagogical training programme, as part of the tertiary level curriculum. Reviewing and developing distance and alternative teaching delivery modes for a wide range of current NZSM courses. Fostering the development of opportunities for training in music education as part of the NZSM curriculum. Carrying out recruitment activity aimed at attracting the top jazz and classical students in New Zealand and internationally in their field (both undergraduate and postgraduate), when required to the NZSM. RESPONSIBLE TO: Associate Director, Academic and Composition KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Internal Programme Leader, Music Studies Programme Leader, Classical Performance Programme Leader, Jazz Programme Leader, Composition Members of the NZSM Executive Committee Corporate Service Manager NZSM Academic/general staff of NZSM Students KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS: Teaching - Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching via all modes of teaching and delivery mediums, including through electronic and on-line technologies. - Design and develop the academic and administrative content of assigned courses and design the appropriate assessment criteria and processes. - Coordinate and administer the teaching delivery and assessment of all papers allocated. - Ensure that all assigned teaching is research-informed and relevant, and that course materials are regularly updated. - Allocate and supervise the teaching and marking of any assigned tutors/senior tutors, graduate assistants and technical support personnel. - Coordinate and administer the teaching delivery and assessment of all allocated papers within the electronic Institute of Enrolment system. - Participate in the peer review of teaching to enhance the quality of course design and delivery. - Arrange for regular student evaluations of teaching for all papers/courses for which paper-coordination responsibilities have been assigned. - Be accessible to students by providing consultation time on course-related matters. - Undertake teaching on each of NZSM’s campuses as required and through distance education. Supervision - Contribute to the University degree completions and success by supervising the research activities of undergraduate and postgraduate students, including postgraduate research projects and theses. Research and Scholarship - Undertake an active and appropriate programme of academic and/or performance research, including participation in team-based research as appropriate, to the level expected by the University’s Strategic Research Capability Policy. - Publish books, papers and/or other scholarly works in academic journals and other publications, and/or participate in public performance and recordings to an international standard, producing creative research outputs in the area of creative or expressive arts. - Participate in and present research at academic conferences, as well as in other appropriate venues. - Contribute to School/Institute/University seminars and workshops. - Seek research funding where there is an opportunity to do so. - Submit recent publications data to Research Management Services for entry onto the appropriate system, as required. - Periodically enter updated ‘Peer Esteem’ and ‘Contributions to the Research Environment’ information onto the University research management system. Service - Contribute to the effective administration of the NZSM, through participation in all appropriate meetings and retreats, and as member and/or chair of committees, as assigned. Service to the Community - Participate in community service activities that further advance the profession or field and which are consistent with the University’s charter and strategic goals. - Assist the School to develop and strengthen relationships with professional and stakeholder communities as appropriate nationally and internationally. - Contribute to the broader community and society through the University’s obligations under the Education Act to fulfil “the role as critic and conscience of society”. - Assist the School to develop an environment which gives effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES: - - Relevant PhD (or equivalent) or other post-graduate qualification. NB. Appointments made where the required qualification is close to completion will require completion within a specified timeframe as a condition of appointment. High level experience in jazz and/or classical performance, preferably with experience across both. Demonstrated teaching and research experience in a university or other tertiary teaching environment. Proven competence in multiple modes and mediums of teaching, including electronic and on-line technologies. Demonstrated ability in effective course design and development, curriculum content, and the presentation and layout of course and study materials. Ability to link course materials with well-defined learning outcomes appropriate to the level of the course. Proven record of rapport with students, and of fostering the highest level of performance standards. Clear, confident and skilled classroom presenter and instrumental lesson teacher. Competence in teaching research writing and supervising research projects and theses. Willingness to participate in peer review of teaching in order to continually improve own and colleagues’ teaching effectiveness. Demonstrated track record of research activity and performance appropriate to the level of appointment. Demonstrated collegiality in an academic teaching, research and service environment. Demonstrated contribution to university service responsibilities.
