Zentangled Found Object 1. Choose an object that would be interesting to be zentangled. Think about form vs. function. 2. If your object is glass, I have glass paint. 3. If your object is fabric, a Sharpie marker should work on it, but there are also fabric markers available in the supply cupboard (they must say fabric markers). 4. If your object is plastic, we may have to gesso it (prime it). Test some Sharpie on it to see if it stays on without wiping off. 5. If your object is multi-colored, you want it to be one single color, so you’ll probably want to gesso it. 6. As you start to zentangle, think about how your object will change. Use the shape and contours of your object to their advantage as you draw your string and fill it with patterns. 7. The last step of a zentangle is to add value. Think about adding colored value and using stippling as your shading technique (especially if you are zentangling a glass object that a pencil cannot be used on). 8. We can spray objects with fixative spray when finished to ensure the zentangles stay on. Object is original and not a last minute thought. Brought in an object to zentangle. Object is original. Brought in an object to zentangle, but it is not an original idea. Created an appropriate string, and more than 8 zentangled patterns/designs. Created an appropriate string, and 7-8 zentangled patterns/designs. Created a string, and 5-6 patterns/designs. Brought in an object to zentangle. Not an original idea and is a last minute thought. Did not create a string and only used 3-4 patterns/designs. Patterns are varied and unique; used elements and principles to create a unified artwork. Patterns used fit contour of the object itself, as well as the negative space of the string they are used in. Uses excellent and precise contrast in lines and patterns; thick, medium and thin lines. Uses the full value scale (8 gradients) and shading techniques to add shading. Student has taken the technique being studied and applied it in a way that is totally his/her own. The student's personality/voice comes through. Everything is original. Patterns are varied; used elements and principles to create a unified artwork. Patterns used somewhat fit the object they were placed on. Patterns are somewhat varied; attempted to use elements and principles to create unified artwork. Attempted to fit appropriate patterns in the string shape. Uses OK contrast in lines and patterns; thick and thin lines. Attempts to use full value scale (45 gradients). Patterns used are very similar in style; artwork is not unified. Patterns are used but don’t fit well within the shape of the string or contours of the object itself. Did not bring in an object. Object supplied by teacher. Object is not completely covered with zentangles. No patterns used. Uses minimal contrast in lines and patterns. Uses bare minimum of value scale (2-3 gradients). No contrast in lines and patterns. Does not use value scale. Student has copied from another source. There is little evidence of creativity, but the student has done the assignment. Student has not made much attempt to meet the requirements of the assignment. A majority of the assignment has been copied from another source. No creativity attempted. Artwork is a direct copy from another source. Could have utilized time better. Artwork is created and maintained with an attempt at neatness. Artwork may be torn, smudged or have stray marks.
