History of Sugarloaf
The Nightingales came to Sugarloaf in September 1987. The first events held at Sugarloaf were at
monthly cutting shows, with 200 head of fresh cattle having to be provided each month. The property
was soon hosting a variety of Equestrian shows including; wester, appaloosa, vaulting, mini ponies,
hacking, Andalusians, harness, Palouse, Warm Bloods, Pony Club Camps, reining, Camp Drafting,
show jumping and even the Junior Heifer Society. The Dream was to create a Parkland so Mr
Nightingale set about planting numerous trees and flowers around the farm. It was at this time, that
Mr Nightingale was persuaded to build a roof over the indoor arena. The existing 97 stables were also
thought not to be sufficient, so the feedlot shed was turned into a further 100 stables.
1991 was the first Dressage Event at Sugarloaf and it was run by Sue Jones, who continued to hold
events up until the end of 1992.
The first SCEC event was held on the 26 September 1993. Mr Nightingale’s comments about the day
were: “Sunny superb day, with approximately 60 entrants, very good, well run”. Pamela Russell- Green
had started a successful Dressage Club and continued to work tirelessly until 28 September 1997 as the
Chairman. Pamela took a well-earned break and….. (not sure what happened here) The club then
formed a new Committee, now chaired by Pam Wood and continues to provide Dressage Riders with
a friendly yet competitive day out.
