Cosumnes River Archaeological Working Laboratory Cosumnes River College The CRC Anthropology Program is pleased to announce a unique independent study opportunity for students interested in archaeology to work on artifacts from a historic site located in Old Sacramento. Project History In the late 1970s CRC anthropology professor David Abrams conducted a field school with CRC students at the site of the former Enterprise Hotel in Old Sacramento. Through their excavations and search of historical records Prof. Abrams and his students learned about the inhabitants of this Gold Rush-era site and their lives. Due to various constraints, however, the collection of artifacts, photos, and notes compiled from the excavation had not been properly analyzed or in some instances, even fully catalogued. In January 2012, the Cosumnes River Archaeological Working Laboratory (CRAWL) was created by professors Amanda Paskey and Anastasia Panagakos to continue and complete Prof. Abrams initial fieldwork. Parts of the collection are on loan to CRAWL and include a variety of artifacts including glassware, ceramics, personal grooming items and effects, animal bone and shell. Students who have worked in CRAWL have gained valuable lab skills, presented their findings at regional conferences and have been accepted to archaeological field schools and four-year universities to continue their studies in archaeology. Student Opportunity Under the supervision of Profs. Amanda Paskey, Anastasia Panagakos and Trine Johansen, the CRC Anthropology program will be offering students the opportunity to work with this collection and learn the fundamentals of archaeological lab analysis. To apply for this project students must meet the following criteria: 1. Have successfully completed one anthropology class at a college or university with a grade of "C" or higher. If the course was not completed at CRC please provide an unofficial transcript. 2. Be enrolled in classes at an academic institution for Fall 2014 (CRC students will be given preference) 3. Be able to commit to the following: a. Two hours of lab time per week on Mondays or Wednesdays b. 3 two-hour seminars or other activities at the discretion of the faculty c. Completion of a lab journal and work summary Students interested in the project should also exhibit certain qualities such as good organization skills, be detailoriented, committed to completing the work, and have a high level of both professionalism and discretion. To apply for the independent study please send the following to Prof. Amanda Paskey at paskeya@crc.losrios.edu by May 30, 2014 or via post at: Prof. Amanda Paskey Cosumnes River College 8401 Center Parkway Sacramento, CA 95823 1. 2. 3. 4. A completed application Curriculum vitae (academic resume) A letter of intention explaining your interest in the project Unofficial transcript (if not a CRC student only) Selected students will be contacted on or before July 1, 2014 by Prof. Paskey. Please note: Participation in CRAWL entails a minimum 54 hour commitment over the semester and is not a paid internship. First time participants will enroll in a one-unit ANTH 495 Independent Study.
