The CRC Anthropology Program is pleased to offer a unique independent study opportunity for
students interested in archaeology to work on artifacts from a historic site located in Old
Sacramento.
Project History
In the late 1970s CRC anthropology professor David Abrams conducted a field school with CRC students at the
site of the former Enterprise Hotel in Old Sacramento. Through their excavations and search of historical
records Prof. Abrams and his students learned about the inhabitants of this Gold Rush-era site and their lives.
Due to various constraints, however, the collection of artifacts, photos, and notes compiled from the excavation
has not been properly analyzed or in some instances, even fully catalogued. Parts of the collection are on loan
to CRC's Anthropology Program for two years and include a variety of artifacts including glassware, ceramics,
personal grooming items and effects, and animal bone among other things.
Student Opportunity
Under the supervision of Profs. Amanda Paskey and Anastasia Panagakos, the CRC Anthropology program will
be offering selected students the opportunity to work with this collection and learn the fundamentals of
archaeological lab analysis through an independent study project (Anth 495). In order to apply for this project,
students must meet the following criteria:
1. Have successfully completed one anthropology class at a college or university with a grade of "B" or higher.
If the course was not completed at CRC please provide an unofficial transcript.
2. Be enrolled in classes at an academic institution for Spring 2016 (CRC students will be given preference)
3. Be able to commit to the following:
a. Two hours of lab time per week
b. 3 two-hour seminars or other activities at the discretion of the faculty
c. Completion of a lab journal and work summary
Students interested in the project should also exhibit certain qualities such as good organization skills, be detailoriented, committed to completing the work, and have a high level of both professionalism and discretion.
To apply for the independent study please send the following to Prof. Amanda Paskey at
paskeya@crc.losrios.edu by December 10, 2015 or via post at:
