Department of Radio and Television Introduction History Given the need of developing communication technologies and professions of radio and television, National Chengchi University (NCCU) set up the first School of Radio and Television among Taiwan universities in 1987 and started to enroll in 1988 upon the approval of Ministry of Education. Since 1992, NCCU started to develop the graduate degree program. In three years, NCCU established full graduate institutes and started to enroll the next year. The university became the first to have Radio and Television Master program in the nation to nurture professions and academic researches in radio and television. With the need of professions in communication, the department of journalism, advertising and radio and television started to enroll student as undecided major in the College of Communication for their freshman and sophomore years, and have their major confirmed in their junior year since 2014 academic year. The College of Communication provides two programs: Media Innovation and Management and Audiovisual Media Design and Production. Starting from 2014 academic year, the original Master program of journalism, advertising and radio and television integrated as College of Communication Master Program. Students would be able to have the freedom to choose their courses and develop themselves base on their potentials. Up till 2014, our department has thirteen full-time professors including four professors, five associate professors and four assistant professors; twenty-two parttime professors including four professors, four assistant professors, six assistant professors, and two teachers; and around 200 undergraduate students and 70 graduate students. The professors in our department have been responsible in teaching, researching and attending the University, Colleges, and Department’s administration work. Our department has been widely acclaimed for our teaching, researches and services. In order to share our research to the academia and industries, we have held integration of academic and practical conferences since 1991 and started printing academic journal, Radio and Television since July 1992. The mission of Department of Radio and Television has been: “developing students’ humanism quality, critical thinking, creativity and international perspective.” Our department has been committed to recruit qualify teachers, substantial hardware facilities to achieve quality teaching environment, promote academic researches and activities and nurtures innovation and scholarly development in radio, television and new media management. Since the beginning of 2014 academic year, the whole college has been integrated and students in the college will be undecided majors in their first two years. The curriculum is divided into three parts: Required courses, elective courses, and major courses. Elective courses consist of: Ability module, Humanistic module, and Basic Major module, which are shared in the College with the aim to equip the students with fundamental knowledge and skills in each field of communication studies. At the same time, students are able to develop based on their interests. Since 2014, juniors and seniors are classified by their programs. There are five programs in total, two of which are under our department: Media Innovation and Management: 1. Understand new media and technology challenge and develop ability of innovation 2. Build up knowledge and ability of media management and policy planning 3. Build up ability of media critical thinking and problem solving Audiovisual Media Design and Production: 1. Familiar with video and audio production and related software 2. Build up ability to tell stories using video and audio symbols 3. Build up ability of video and audio appreciation and creativity Meanwhile, students gain real working experiences to develop their teamwork, service and responsibility, and professional work ethic through internships experimental center in the College of Communication, professional internships, and graduation projects. These experiments nurture students to be professionals in “proposal planning, playwrights, direct and produce” in digital content production system and management and policies talents in new media. Resources and facilities Under the condition of resources sharing and technologies integration, the College of Communication provides software and hardware including two digital TV studios, The Voice of NCCU Radio, AV Labs, Media Labs, IT Labs, Theater for learning and practicing purposes. Meanwhile, internship provides “Student Assistant Autonomy Policy” focus on “learning from actual practice”, to develop students’ leadership and communication skills. NCCU also have Library of Communication where collects numerous of resources including three hundred and fifty Chinese and English journals, and around thirty thousands of books. It is knows as the only professional Library of Communication in the nation and throughout East Asia. Future Development There are more and more new video platforms and media devices now a day in this digital convergent era with product such as the iPhone, iPad, 3D image and virtual image. Consumer behavior and experiences are different from the past. With the development of technology, production skills, media platforms, and industry model innovate in a rapid pace. Therefore the Department of Radio and Television in National Chengchi University’s goal is not only to nurture students’ humanisms quality, creativities, critical thinking in “planning, playwright, direct, produce” but also emphasis on the skill and knowledge of the new technologies. With the consideration of designing all kinds of interactive interface and how different scenarios would affect the consumer behavior on audio and video content, we response to question on the new media business models, management policies and other issues to create more talents in the career of communication. In recent years, societies changes rapidly due to globalization. Communication technologies develop fast and cross-industries integrate frequently. In addition, education resources are reducing but competition is growing. Our department’s goal is to use the idea of technology integration to nurture students to have the knowledge and skills to integrate with both domestic culture and international culture of communication. In response to the diverse environment, and coordination with college’s integration philosophy and policy, we continue to adjust, innovate and improve along with our goals. We hope to make full use of our resources to advance our teaching, researches and services so to nurture professional talents for the communication industry. Career After graduation, students can work in the field of: communication company, newspaper, radio station, television station, public relation, magazine, advertising, film, Internet, record company… etc. Many students also have the opportunities to work in the field of telecommunication, eBook, cell phone…etc., due to the integration of digital content. Working contents include: video and audio production (director, playwright, producer, audio, camera, production assistant, art and proposal planning), journalist, news anchor, radio and television proposal planning, advertising, sales and management…etc. In recent years, more than half of our graduates have opportunities in communication related career such as radio and television, culture and creative, news, and Internet media. One third of our students attend graduate school to further their studies in communication, art, design, sales, and policy and management.
