7777 HENNESSY BLVD SUITE #103
BATON ROUGE, LA 70808
The Louisiana Pediatric Cardiology Foundation (LPCF) is an IRS 501(C)(3) tax-exempt, non-profit
organization which provides support to children suffering from cardiac disease and their families. The LPCF also
provides aid with medical equipment and supports continuing education in the area of pediatric cardiology. This local
organization was formed to help meet the financial needs resulting from a child suffering with cardiac disease. Our
purpose is to partially fill gaps where legitimate needs exist; we do not attempt to replace existing services. Four broad
categories of need have been identified. By providing state of the art equipment and education, the LPCF strives to
advance the practice of pediatric cardiology in the identified region.
Michael S. Crapanzano, M.D. is a native of Baton Rouge. He received his Bachelor of Science in Zoology and
Doctor of Medicine degrees from Louisiana State University. He completed his pediatric residency and pediatric
cardiology fellowship training at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and returned home to open his practice in
1995. Dr. Crapanzano is board certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics in the specialties of pediatrics and
pediatric cardiology.

What is an EKG?
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a test that checks for problems with the electrical activity of your heart. An
EKG translates the heart's electrical activity into line tracings on paper. The spikes and dips in the line tracings are
called waves. The heart is a muscular pump made up of four chambers . The two upper chambers are called atria, and
the two lower chambers are called ventricles. A natural electrical system causes the heart muscle to contract and
pump blood through the heart to the lungs and the rest of the body.
Why is an EKG performed?
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is done to:

surrounding the heart (pericarditis), or angina.
Find the cause of symptoms of heart disease, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or rapid, irregular
heartbeats (palpitations).
Find out if the walls of the heart chambers are too thick (hypertrophied).
Check how well medicines are working and whether they are causing side effects that affect the heart.
Check how well mechanical devices that are implanted in the heart, such as pacemakers, are working to control
a normal heartbeat.
Check the health of the heart when other diseases or conditions are present, such as high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, cigarette smoking, diabetes, or a family history of early heart disease.
