Aloha ‘Aina Recycling Drive

Attention all community members—we are holding an

Aloha ‘Aina Recycling Drive on our school campus on Saturday,

October 24, 2015 from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to dispose of items as well as raise a little money for our school. Items that are being collected are e-waste (printers, cameras, computers, tablets, video game counsels, televisions, etc.); batteries; cardboard;

(all beverage containers with the

HI-5 label…mostly aluminum cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles); and all scrap metal.

Please remember that scrap metal includes any broken appliances (refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, toasters, dishwashers, etc.), bicycles, vehicles, metal furniture, file cabinets, etc.

Spread the word and save your items to bring to the school on

‘AINA In Schools

October is Farm to School month! To celebrate, SBES students will participate in

‘AINA Chef Visits and ‘AINA

Field Trips to local farms. On

Valley to learn about their local food system. Also this month, all

SBES students will be enjoying their “farm-fresh” ‘AINA Kine

Healthy Snacks, Grades 2 and 6 will be learning about edible parts of plants/fruits and balanced breakfasts in ‘AINA

Nutrition Lessons, and Grades K,

1, 4, and 5 will be studying butterfly and plant life cycles, planting ‘uala, and observing and recording growth in their bush bean plants in ‘AINA Garden at SBES!

Sustainablity Club

There are still a few spaces left for students to join the sustainability club! Please return your club flier to the office to reserve your spot! Halfsheets went home with students in grades 4-6 the week of

September 14 th .

Friends of Sunset Beach welcomes Patti Walden!!!!

Friends of Sunset Beach is pleased to announce that Patti

Walden is working as our parttime art instructor for the 2015-

2016 school year. Ms.Walden is providing art instruction on

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout the school year. This art program is provided by the fundraising efforts of Friends of

Sunset Beach. Ms.Walden has a rich history as a professional artist as well as a strong background in teaching art to children. She has extensive classroom experience and her personal goal is “To instruct and encourage elementary school students in their learning pursuits”. She does this through art as a means to discover their passion. Friends of Sunset Beach is a 100% volunteer based organization founded in 2010 with their intention: “ To support the arts in the Sunset Beach

Community and to increase

awareness and opportunities for all to participate in and understand the arts” FOSB is currently seeking a volunteers to assist with their website and social media presence, any help is appreciated. Mahalo! Please email: friendsofsunsetbeach@gmail.com

SBES PTCA News

Aloha Families! We have had our

1 st PTCA Mtg in September and we always post our mtg. minutes in the front office on the parent bulletin board for information.

Our PTCA will be funding

Chromebooks (laptops) for all classrooms to help teacher’s and students with intervention/enrichment blocks.

Having these chromebooks will allow teacher’s to work with a small group while other’s use chromebooks or do learning opportunities to stretch learning or fill gaps. We will also be sponsoring a Reward Assembly with “Taiko Drumming” coming up soon for our SBES Sharks!

Parents who have signed up to help with merchandise booths for the surf contests will be contacted soon as the HIC PRO

Surf Contest holding period is end of October to middle of

Fire Prevention Week!!!!!

HFD Fire Prevention Week is

October 4 – 10, 2015 this year.

Our students had the opportunity to draw a picture with this year’s theme of “Hear the BEEP, where you SLEEP.

Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.” Firefighters then chose the winning picture which went to: GRADE 5 STUDENT

ROMA LERNER!!! Students are painting the picture on a 4x8 plywood mural which will be on display at the Sunset Fire

Station for the month of

October in honor of Fire

Prevention Week! Congratulations
