Knitted fabrics

Knitted fabrics:
1. Explain the difference between knitted fabrics and woven fabrics:
Woven fabric is made of strands of weft weaving in and out of the
warp yarns. The resulting fabric has little stretch to it. Knitted
fabric is made of a single strand of yarn with row upon row of
loops pulled through loops. The resulting fabric is stretchy.
Knitting uses more yarn than weaving of similar dimensions.
2. Name three different examples of knitting: Warp weft and
crochet.
3. Compare and contrast weft knitting to warp knitting: weft
knitting is where you loop the yarns ACROSS the fabric whereas
warp knitting is looping the yarn DOWN the fabric.
4. Explain what is meant by the term ‘non-woven fabrics’: they are
produced directly from the fibre by gluing, heating or stitching
(bonding) the fibres together. There are no weaves of fibres, the
fibres are bonded togather.
5. Name three main ways of producing non-woven fabrics: by
gluing heating or stitching.
6. Give two examples of non-woven fabrics: felt and dish cloths.
Activities:
1. Define the following terms:
a) Fabric: Cloth, typically produced by weaving or knitting textile
fibres.
b) Woven Fabrics: a piece of cloth produced my weaving.
c) Knitted Fabrics: a cloth produced by looping yarns together
with a set of knitting needles.
d) Non-Woven fabrics: fibres that are bonded together to create a
material.

4. Traditional felt made from woollen fibres: Felt is produced as these
fibres and/or fur are pressed together using heat, moisture, and
pressure.
Advantages of knitted fabrics:
Advantages of non-woven
fabrics:
 stretchy in all directions
 durable
 light in weight
 mimic the appearance and
 absorbent
texture of a woven fabric
Disadvantages of knitted fabrics: Disadvantages of non-woven
fabrics:
 shrinks
 can be cut or torn easily
 loose their shape and sag
 If one of the loops of a
knitted garment breaks, a
hole is made which starts a
run.
7. Classify the following as woven, knitted or non-woven:
a) Chiffon: A light, sheer fabric typically made of silk or nylon.
b) Jersey: A knitted garment with long sleeves worn over the
upper body.
c) Felt: A kind of cloth made by rolling and pressing wool or
another suitable textile while applying moisture or heat, causing
the fibres to mat together to create a smooth surface.
d) Wadding: Soft, thick material used to line garments or pack
fragile items, esp. absorbent cotton.
e) Velvet: A closely woven fabric of silk, cotton, or nylon that has
a thick short pile on one side.
f) Drill: Drill is stout durable cotton fabric with a strong bias
(diagonal) in the weave.
g) Lawn: Lawn cloth or lawn is a plain weave textile, originally
of linen but now chiefly cotton.
