What The Christmas Carol means to me

The Christmas Carol is a classic that is read all over the world. It brings a good message and makes you think whether or not you have been a good person. You can be happy without money is one of the things this novel teaches. “Some people laughed to see the alteration in him, but he let them laugh, and little heeded them; for he was wise enough to know that nothing ever happened on this globe, for good, at which some people did not have their fill of laughter in the outset; and knowing that such as these would be blind anyway, he thought it quite as well that they should wrinkle up their eyes in grins, as have the malady in less attractive forms.” is a quote from the novel that is on page 111. This quote also says that we should be kind and generous which is one of the themes of the novel. The quote means that even though people laugh at you, they don’t know so you let them laugh. The people laughing don’t know what they’re laughing at. They should be kind, generous and not judge. A quote from page 63 is, “There never was such a goose. Bob said he didn’t believe there ever was such a goose cooked. Its tenderness and flavor, size and cheapness, were the themes of universal admiration.” This quote supports the theme that money can’t buy happiness because the goose represents the Cratchit’s poverty. Even though the goose is cheap, it is appreciated and the Cratchit family is still happy. One last quote from the novel is, “If man you are in heart, not adamant, forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered what the surplus is, and where it is.” This quote is said towards Scrooge to be kind and generous. He needs to change his ways to be a better person. We should be kind and generous.

How does this novel reflect on the social issues of the Victorian Era? Basically the themes of the book can answer this question. Money can’t buy you happiness is one of the themes and that was one of the social issues back in the past. The novels theme connects to society even today because people today need to be thankful for what they have. They need to be generous instead of greed. They need to be kind instead of mean. Some people today have nothing at all and are happy and some have everything and are ungrateful. That needs to be changed.

This novel is considered a classic because it is passed down from generation to generation. The theme is also something that everyone should know. The Christmas Carol is a really spectacular novel and it really taught me a valuable lesson.
