Plymouth Arts Centre Cinema Guide June 2015 A Little Chaos (12A) Tues 2 June Dir. Alan Rickman, UK, 2015, 116 mins. Cast. Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Helen McCrory, Matthias Schoenaerts. Rickman has fashioned a sprightly period romp, and plays King Louis XIV with a dry bemusement. But the film’s greatest strength lies in its emphasis on women and their relationships, with a sublime performance from Winslet. A Little Chaos is a delicious treat for green-fingered romantics. The Falling (12) Tues 2 - Thur 4 June Dir: Carol Morley, UK, 2014, 100 mins. Cast: Maisie Williams, Maxine Peake, Greta Scacchi, Joe Cole. Maisie Williams (TV’s Game of Thrones) stars in this absorbing drama. After a school tragedy, a mysterious fainting epidemic breaks out; this bold headrush of a film is confirmation that Morley is fast becoming one of Britain’s most distinctive and exciting film-makers. Far From The Madding Crowd (U) Wed 3 - Thur 4 June Dir. John Schlesinger, UK, 1967, 168 mins. Cast. Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Alan Bates. Bathsheba Everdene is the most modern of 19th-century heroines, captivating the hearts and minds of three very different men. But free spirited folly soon leads to devastating tragedy, set against the harsh, sodden beauty of the Dorset landscape. Far From The Madding Crowd (12A) Sat 6 - Wed 17 June Dir. Thomas Vinterberg, USA/UK, 2015, 119 mins. Cast. Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge Carey Mulligan is Bathsheba Everdine, the young woman determined to defy the restrictive social conventions of Victorian society and find her own way in life. Newly adapted for the screen by writer David Nicholls (One Day), this moving and intelligent new version of Thomas Hardy’s pastoral novel retains the melodrama and agricultural colour of the book (and of the 1967 film) whilst giving the characters and story a subtly modern inflection, making this a relevant and thoroughly engaging drama about the nature of relationships. Filmed on location in Dorset and boasting an outstanding performance by Mulligan, Thomas Vinterberg’s film will succeed in pleasing fans of high quality literary adaptations, and bringing Hardy to new audiences. Samba (15) Sat 6 - Thur 11 June Dir. Olivier Nakache & Eric Toledano, France, 2014, 119 mins, subtitled. Cast. Omar Sy, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Tahar Rahim, Izia Hegelin Comedy drama from the film- makers behind Untouchable. Elsa and Fred (12A) Fri 12 - Thur 18 June Dir. Michael Radford, US, 2015, 95 mins. Cast. Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, Marcia Gay Harden. Recently widowed 80 year-old Fred is moved, against his will, next door to 74 year-old Elsa. Despite their differing temperaments and outlooks on life, Elsa coaxes an embittered Fred out of his shell. Warm, lovely and lifeaffirming. Phoenix (12A) Fri 12 - Thur 18 June Dir. Christian Petzold, Germany, 2014, 98 mins, subtitled. Cast. Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld, Michael Maertens, Nina Kunzendorf. An ingeniously plotted, dreamy, twisted and heart-breaking film, set in rubblestrewn post-war Berlin. Phoenix follows Nelly, a disfigured concentrationcamp survivor, unrecognisable after facial reconstruction surgery, as she searches for the husband who might have betrayed her. A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (15) Fri 19 - Thurs 25 June Dir. Ana Lily Amirpour, US, 2014, 101 mins, subtitled. Cast. Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi. The Iranian skateboarding vampire feminist spaghetti western we’ve all been waiting for! Starkly shot in black and white by Amirpour, a comic-book creator who is clearly influenced by Jarmusch and David Lynch, this is genuinely brilliant and overflowing with ideas and a bone-dry humour. A Royal Night Out (12A) Fri 19 June - Thur 2 July Dir. Julian Jarrold, UK, 2015, 97 mins. Cast. Sarah Gadon, Emily Watson, Rupert Everett. On V.E. Day in 1945, Princess Margaret and her sister Elizabeth were granted permission to leave Buckingham Palace for the night to celebrate. Based on true and previously untold events, this heartwarming story looks at two teenage girls looking for romance and danger but trying to avoid a scandal. They explore a London they have never seen, having previously been protected from the reality of wartime Britain. Embrace the plummy accents and stiff upper lips, as this is a fun coming- of-age story with Rupert Everett as a notably wonderful King. The New Girlfriend (15) Fri 2 June - Thur 2 July Dir.
