A family is a group of people who are tied together by blood, co-residence, or affection. Family composition refers to the makeup of a family, including the number of members, their ages, and their relationships to each other. What is cultural bias? What is an example of this? Cultural bias is the interpretation or judgment of practices by the standards of one's own culture. For example, we may look at a different cultural practice and consider it wrong because it is not the way we handle a particular concern. What are stereotypes? How are they different from prejudice? Stereotypes are assumed beliefs about a group of people. Prejudice is a preconceived notion about a group. What is the difference between a nuclear family and an extended family? A nuclear family is different from an extended family because nuclear families consist of two parents with their children and extended families are those with multiple generations living under one roof. CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 1 How can families assimilate to a new culture? The families can learn the language, eat the culture’s food, and/or listen to their music. What are some of the problems with stereotypes or cultural bias when looking at families? Cultural bias and stereotypes can becomes problems in families when they move to a new place and they are involved in a new society and people will begin to judge them and cause conflict without even knowing them. Adversity affects today’s family, just as Black Death affected families from earlier times. What kinds of adverse challenges do today’s families face and how can they manage the situations? Why are families diverse in composition? How are family lifestyles of today different than the past? ADD A TABLE OF CONTENTS It couldn’t be easier to add a table of contents to your report. Just click in the document where you want the TOC to appear. Then, on the References tab, click Table of Contents and then click one of the Automatic options. When you do, the TOC is inserted and text you formatted using Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 styles is automatically added to it. ADD A BIBLIOGRAPHY On the References tab, in the Citations & Bibliography group, click Insert Citation for the option to add sources and then place citations in the document. When you’ve added all the citations you need for your report, on the References tab, click Bibliography to insert a formatted bibliography in your choice of styles. And you’re done. Nice work! 2
