Camp NorthStar 2013 – Summer Internship Job Descriptions

Art Instructor

This intern will be responsible for the following: preparing & leading weekly art classes with students, coordinating installation of public art project, manage LIT art project, coordinating taking photographs and managing print & on line photo displays.

Weekly Art Classes – All students in Camp NorthStar will participate in once/week art classes.

The Art Instructor will be responsible for lesson planning and teaching these classes.

Preparation and teaching of these classes will take 35% of this intern’s time.

Public Art Project – The Art Instructor will work with selected older students on a project to create “public art” to be installed in the community (past examples include mosaic stepping stones). This activity may take 25% of this intern’s time.

LIT Art project – The Art Instructor will work with the LIT Camp Counselor to help the LIT students (high school students) create crafts which they will attempt to sell in Neighborhood

Festivals. The additional class time with LIT students should take about 15% of this intern’s time and will be done in close collaboration with the intern assigned as LIT Counselor.

Camp photography – The Art Instructor will be part of the team (team will be led by the Camp

Director) to photograph the summer program and create displays capturing the essence of

Camp for campers, parents, and donors all to enjoy. This activity is likely to take about 25% of this intern’s time.

Gardening/Nutrition Instructor

This intern will be responsible for the following: preparation & leading of weekly gardening/nutrition classes with all students; managing the NorthStar Garden; working with LIT’s to manage the garden and harvest produce for sale in Saturday Festivals. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is local during the spring semester so that this Intern can be involved in planning and preparation of the garden during that time.

Weekly Gardening/Nutrition Classes – All students in Camp NorthStar will participate in once/week gardening/nutrition classes. The Instructor will be responsible for lesson planning and teaching these classes. Preparation and teaching of these classes will take approximately

35% of this intern’s time.

Resourcing Instructors & Counselors – Some aspects of nutrition/gardening class can be carried over into other sections of camp (incorporated into science lessons, for example). This intern will be able to work with Academic Instructors to help integrate nutrition & gardening lessons into those sessions. This activity might take 10% of the Gardening/Nutrition Intern’s time.

Managing the NorthStar Garden – this activity will mostly overlap with working with LIT’s (high school students) since these students will assist in this management. But there will be times of planning & garden management without LIT’s.

Working with LIT’s to manage garden & prepare to sell produce – This intern will work in collaboration with the LIT Counselor on this project. Items for sale may include prepared foods

(example – pickles) in addition to produce. Whether capacity for prepared foods exists will be decided by the spring. This activity and managing the garden is likely to take close to 55% of this intern’s time.

Swim Instructor

This intern will be responsible for planning & implementing the instructional swimming classes provided each morning at Camp NorthStar. The Swim Instructor will be assisted by high school age lifeguards and

by the Camp Counselor staff associated with each class of students. Each class of students will participate in swim classes twice per week. Swim classes will only be in the mornings. In the afternoons the swim instructor will serve as a substitute or additional Camp Counselor as needed.

LIT Counselor – This Intern will focus on high school students (Leaders-In-Training) who are involved with Camp NorthStar. These rising 9 th & 10 th grade students will participate in activities including: assisting with swim lessons and other aspects of camp; job skills training; college & career exploration activities; entrepreneurship program activities; bible study & discipleship.

Middle School Counselor – Interns serving as Camp Counselors to the Middle School age group will lead their group of kids through the range of activities at Camp NorthStar. The Counselors will work in partnership with other Counselors to manage the middle school groups.

Elementary Counselor – Interns serving as Camp Counselor to the Elementary School age group will lead their group of kids through the range of activities at Camp NorthStar. These Counselors will have a

Junior Counselor (11 th or 12 th grader) serving as their assistant.
