Utah Valley University - Information Systems & Technology
Upper Level Internship
Criteria for Earning Internship Credit
The College of Technology & Computing is committed to adequately preparing students for their intended career
path. Therefore, an internship provides students with applied knowledge to complement the theory learned in the
classroom and enhances their resumes and marketability upon graduation.
It is intended that students will register for internship credit toward the end of their program. In order to provide an
adequate knowledge base, students should have completed a majority of their upper division course work and be a
second semester Junior or Senior. Departments may have additional requirements. Check with your advisor.




Students may take Internship over more than one semester but may not accrue more than a total of 16 hours
over the course of their college career.
Departments may place further requirements on the number of credits that will count towards that major’s
requirements. See your Advisor for details.
Internship credit may not be earned or awarded retroactively.
The student will receive a CR designation on his/her transcript. No letter grades are given.
Work Hours Requirement
The Formula: For every 75 hours of employment in a semester a student may earn 1 credit hour of internship. The
College of Technology & Computing has a 2 credit (150 hour) minimum per semester. This works out to be five
hours of work per week per credit hour over the course of a 15 week semester. We do not approve more than 3
credit hours in a semester without extenuating circumstances.
Project Proposal
Each student must write a project proposal in accordance with the provided form in order to be considered for an
internship.
Objective Requirement
For each internship credit a student sets measurable career performance and learning objectives that go beyond the
present scope of his/her job. These objectives should come directly from the project proposal. The student then
works to accomplish those objectives during the semester. Mid-term and Final Evaluation forms help to assess
progress and quality of completed objectives.
Job Site Visit
You may be asked to help facilitate a visit to your job site. Due to work load and time constraints, the Internship
Faculty coordinator may opt to conduct the job site visit by phone.

Exam week.
Include the following:





Additional duties and responsibilities if added during the internship. Please elaborate on how this affected your
project.

A brief summary of what was learned from your project. Please explain objective by objective.
An assessment of how this internship helped you become better prepared for your career.
Changes during the semester.
I handle these on a case by case basis. Please contact me as soon as you know

Dear Employer:
Thank you for your willingness to partner with the College of Technology & Computing
at Utah Valley University in providing our student an opportunity to earn credit toward
graduation by participating in the Internship Program this semester.
In order for the student to be successful, it is critical that you have a clear
understanding of what will be expected from you as the employer in the internship process.
The following checklist will assist you in fulfilling your responsibility to the student and the
Internship Coordinator:
Before
31 Aug
Before
5 Sept
Before
1 Oct
Flexible
Before
2 Dec
Meet with the employee/student and provide direction in developing workplace
goals or objectives that are challenging and will require growth in the student.
Approve and sign the student’s formal Objectives Worksheet document.
Meet with the student to evaluate progress made and complete the Midterm
Evaluation Form which documents progress to the Internship Coordinator.
Meet with the Internship Coordinator at the work location to possibly complete a
Job Site Visit. (This will often be handled by phone due to time/travel constraints
or scheduling conflicts.)
Review and sign student’s Term Paper, which provides assessment of objectives.
Complete the employer section of the Final Evaluation Form designed to
document student performance on completed objectives.
It is possible and understandable that a student’s job responsibilities could change
sometimes during the semester due to a change in company priorities. If this should happen, have
the student contact me so that we can restructure the objectives.
If completed correctly, the Internship will accomplish three goals:
1) Allow the student to step out of his/her job description and accomplish something above and
beyond normal duties.
2) Allow you, the supervisor, to observe your employee outside his/her comfort zone and
possibly accomplish one of those tasks that you might not normally have the time to complete.
3) Allow the school to showcase our students’ abilities.
We are dedicated to making this three-way partnership successful. Please feel free to
contact me if I can assist you in any way. Again, thank you for your support. I look forward to
working with you this semester.
Sincerely,
Professor George D. Hickman

How to Write Objectives
What are objectives?
Objectives are goals. They are targets to be reached. Successful professionals constantly create
goals to work toward. Internship students are required to set their own targets, what they want to
achieve.
Objectives must:







Provide the student with a challenge; you must stretch beyond the routine job.
Combine academic knowledge with workplace environment.
Be achievable by Monday of the last week of classes for the semester.
Be reasonable within your work place and have your employer’s approval.
Be measurable.
Accomplishments must be verifiable by a rational, performance, or data-based method,
such as: increasing sales by 20 percent, having a 100 percent safety record for 3 months,
or completing the 30 hour management training program.
Be specific.
Specify a completion date.
Target dates are required for measurability. They must be reasonable within the
framework of the task, and once the date is chosen, consistent steps must be taken to keep
the momentum and to complete the project on time during the semester.
