Aloha, and welcome to Physics! In this course, you will be expected to study hard, do your own work, participate 100% in all activities, and remain focused and engaged during labs and lectures. Course Goals This course is a college preparatory laboratory science course. Upon completion of this course you will have an understanding of the major concepts in physics including Mechanics, Dynamics, and basic optics. In this course you will be required to apply logic and reasoning to solve problems, as well as analyze empirical and graphical data. Rules & Expectations In this course you are expected to: come to class everyday prepared to learn and ready to work. This includes bringing all supplies to class and having completed all homework assignments. contribute positively to a safe and productive learning environment for all. respect your classroom and resources. keep your area clean and neat, clean up after yourself, treat all supplies, materials, and equipment with care and respect. pay attention and participate 100% of the time. comply with all rules, regulations, and expectations as outlined in the Kamehameha Schools Maui High School Student Handbook. be in your seat when the bell rings; otherwise, you are tardy. wait to be excused by the teacher at the end of class before leaving. seek help if you need it right away! If you have questions, are unclear on assignments, homework, lab reports, or anything else, make an appointment to see me during office hours! Do not wait until the end of the semester to seek help! Class Rules: NO ipods, Mp3 players, cell phones, etc… NO eating or drinking at lab tables. Throw away all food rubbish in outside trash. Plagiarism Working together on assignments, in labs, and classwork is encouraged and is an essential part of learning. However, each student is expected to turn in his or her own work. Your writing, lab reports, essays, workbook answers, etc, must be in your own words. Always credit sources and be careful of internet sources. Just because it’s on the internet doesn’t mean it’s correct and has been verified. Always use reputable sources – Wikipedia is usually not a reputable source but can sometimes provide valuable links to good information. www.turnitin.com will be used to check for plagiarism. Consequences Students who do not follow classroom guidelines, rules, and expectations will face these consequences: o 1st warning: warning only. o 2nd warning: 30 minute after school detention. o 3rd warning: one hour after school detention with parent contact. o 4th warning: Parent contact and referral to administration. If a student is caught plagiarizing, cheating on a test, etc….the assignment in question will receive a “0” (F) and administration and parents will be contacted. Materials Needed It is your choice how you would like to take and organize your notes. Laptops are not allowed during note taking, however you may type out your notes later if you would like. Some students may choose to use a marble composition book to take notes in, others may prefer loose paper and store it in a binder – it’s up to you; your notes are for you to refer to and study for texts and work reference. Classwork and homework each week will consist of worksheets as well as book questions. Book questions must be completed according to the rubric (to be given) and must be in your own handwriting. You must have a notebook specifically for answering your book questions, activity reflections, do-nows, and any other homework. Please keep your notes separate from your work – you may need to have two notebooks – one for notes and one for work, if you choose to take notes in a notebook. You will be receiving a textbook: Physics Principles and Problems by Glencoe Science. Should your textbook become lost or damaged you will be responsible to replace the textbook at a cost of about $100. Attendance and Absences Labs & activities conducted in this course are time consuming, costly, and difficult to repeat due to availability of the materials. Therefore, labs & activities are extremely difficult to make up. If you need to miss a lab even for an excused absence it may need 2 Kamehameha Schools Maui Physics Course Syllabus/Disclosure Statement Spring, 2012 to be made up with an alternate assignment such as a write-up on the topic. Labs missed due to unexcused absences will result in a “0”. If you know in advance that you will be absent from class please let me know ASAP. That way we can make arrangements so that you are not behind when you return. All assignments are due at the start of class, turned in to the inbox for your class. Late work and unexcused absence work will not be accepted. This course moves fast and if your work is late, it will make you even farther behind, and it may prove very difficult to catch up. If you miss a quiz or unit test you must make it up the day you return to school, provided the absence was excused. You must not miss the final as it is at the end of the semester and you will probably not get a chance to make it up. Grading Policy Grades will be awarded on a points & percentage system. Points will be awarded according to your performance on your homework and classwork, lab worksheets, group and activity work and participation, as well as quizzes, the midterm, and the final. Grades are weighted as follows: o quizzes, midterm, and final: 50% of grade. o Labs and other work completion – homework, classwork, activities, etc: 50% of grade. Grading scale: o A 93-100% o A- 90-92% o B+ 87-89% o B 83-86% o B- 80-82% o C+ 77-79% o C 73-76% o C- 70-72% o D+ 67-69% o D 63-66% o D- 60-62% o F below 59% Grades will be posted on KS connect; it is your responsibility to continually check for accuracy and see me right away if you have questions or there are any discrepancies. If you find errors you must have the graded paper in question in order for your score to be corrected. You also need to save all work to study for the final, so be sure you do!
