PART VII
VIIVII
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth (Ps. 127: 4).
The Almighty likens the training of a child to the shooting of an arrow! And many
important lessons in child-rearing become available to us as we consider the details of just
what takes place in a launch. For example, someone other than the child sets the direction.
Someone other than the child establishes the trajectory. Someone other than the child
provides the motive force and effort for a successful launch! More control and guidance are
required at the start of the process, and less control and guidance are required as the launch
proceeds – and especially as it nears completion. At a certain point in time the arrow
becomes airborne and is out of the control of the archer. Most importantly, the momentum
gained as the arrow is progressively released turns into what might be termed “auto–
guidance” as the tail-feathers furnished the arrow assume control. Canterbury’s Tally System
is designed to furnish parents the needed feedback required during the “launch” of their
children. The goal of all school communications is not to upset parents nor necessarily to
disturb them! The goal is to be prompt and thorough and honest so that parents may make
necessary adjustments while there is still time in the launching process. The fifth
commandment states that children are to honor their parents (Deuteronomy 5:16). St. Paul
reiterates and expands upon this in the New Testament in Ephesians 6:2. Hear what he says:
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother;
which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou
mayest live long on the earth. It is a sad commentary on our day that so many parents have
either abandoned this bellwether role in the godly development of their children – or worse,
have reversed it – honoring their children above God’s Word as did Eli of old! Wherefore…
honourest thy sons above me? God asked Eli! This was not a neutral fact-finding question on
God’s part, but a scathing indictment (I Samuel 2:29)! We do well to note that even Mary
and Joseph required this honor of Jesus, though spotless and sinless all His days. The
Evangelist, Doctor Luke, after relating the episode in our Lord’s life at the age of twelve in
the Temple, informs us that Jesus returned to Nazareth with them, and was subject unto
them! We may safely conclude that Mary and Joseph took seriously their parental role in the
training of the Son of God! And note the concluding verse of the narrative (St. Luke 2:52):
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. The very next
chapter describes Him in “full flight” beginning His earthly ministry. Remember to train up
your children in the way they should go. The promise is that when they are old (“flying
through life” if you will) they will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6)! ♥♥.

Perhaps the greatest scientist who ever lived – and a
Christian – once said:
“We account the Scriptures of God to be the most
sublime philosophy.
I find more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible
than in any profane
history whatsoever…Worshipping God and the Lamb in the
temple:
God, for his benefaction in creating all things, and
the Lamb,
for his benefaction in redeeming us with his blood.”
