We use LOTS (Language of the Standards) to describe the words your teachers use when sharing new ideas and matierials with you. Today you are going to learn about LOTS by learning the definitions of key words within the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards by creating a mini-dictionary. Copy these definitions into your notebook. After that, write a sentence for each word, using it properly. Finally, draw a picture to illustrate each definition. ANALYZES (verb) – to look at something closely in detail CAUSE AND EFFECT (adjective) – describes the relationship between two or more actions or events CAPTIONS (noun) at title that explains a picture or drawing, especially in magazines and textbooks CLAIMS (verb) to state an opinion or fact with the possibility of debate COMPREHENSION (noun) the act of understanding COMPARE AND CONTRAST (adjective) similarities and differences DETERMINES (verb) to settle or decide DIAGRAMS (noun) a drawing or a plan that explains the parts of an operation DISCUSSES (verb) to talk over or write about ENGAGES (verb) to gain the attention of a person or persons EVALUATE (verb) to judge or determine the significance or worth of EVIDENCE (noun) something that shows proof or an outward sign of something EXPLORES (verb) to investigate or search for IDENTIFIES (verb) to determine what group ILLUSTRATIONS (noun) a picture (sometimes in a book or magazine LOGICAL ORDER (noun) things being in the most proper order, efficient READING INFORMATIONAL (noun)a nonfiction (true) story, article or novel READING LITERARY (noun) a fictional (imaginary) story, article or novel RELEVANT (adjective) pertaining to the matter or issue of discussion REASONING (verb) the process of forming a judgment, decision or inference RESPONDS (verb) saying something in reply RELATES (verb) to show the relationship between TRANSITIONS (noun) a movement from one subject to another TEXT (noun) the main body of matter in a script, book, newspaper, etc. Grading Rubric – I will evaluate your work (look at the definition above) based on neatness, detail within your written example and the creativity (not the look) of your images)
