WORKING EXPERIENCE IN AGRICULTURE.
Established 1000 hectares mixed farm DNA FARMS.
1) As the Chief Executive Officer of DNA farms, Chief Dave N. Amonu has
successfully established a 1000 hectares mixed farm in 20 years of intensive
commercial farming activity in Owerri.
The farm has cropped in 1991, 100 hectares of cassava (TMS 4(2) 1425)
manually with a view to exporting cassava pellets when suddenly the
Federal Government banned the export of cassava and its derivatives.
In 1992-1993 50 hectares of smooth cayenne pineapples, 100 hectares of
Tenera Oil Palm Plantation(still fruiting).
2)
We developed a blue print for the cultivation of virtually every crop that
grows in the south east zone of Nigeria. These include: cassava, yam,
pineapples, ginger, okra, garden egg, maize, soya bean, cowpea, paw-paw,
pepper, oil palm, coconut, bitter kola, avocado pear, lime, lemon, oranges,
mango, vetiva grass etc.
3)
Medicinal Botanical Garden. We have developed a medicinal botanical
garden containing commercial quantities of gingseng, aloe vera, vertiva,
lemon grasses and moringa spps.
4)
Livestock Farming: DNA Farms has extensive exposure in livestock farming
namely poultry, snailry, turkey, duck, goatry (using hybrid stock we
generated from Nassarawa and Imo State breeds).
5)
Wide International Exposure: The CEO, Chief Dave Amonu, has selfsponsored over 20 trips overseas to countries (including India and Thailand)
that have similar climatic and economic status (at the time) with Nigeria in
search of adaptable agribusiness packages. The most recent trip was made
late in 2007 to Bankok, Thailand when Ranjit University and Asian institute
of Technology(AIT) organized an agribusiness package for some selected
participants from Nigeria. Fish and spirulina (the highest protein and
nutrient source in one product in the world) farming occupied center stage
(as well as orchid flower farming for export) during the trip. In Bankok, we
had the opportunity to understudy 20 small scale projects (including
mushroom production) established by the current king of Thailand in his
palace premises principally to set the necessary example that has now
made Thailand (among other things) the largest producer of rice in the
whole world and major exporters of tilapia (which they probably collected
from Nigeria) to the USA.
RECOGNITIONS IN AGRIBUSINESS
1) The International institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Ibadan carried out
collaborative research in cassava and yam multiplication in DNA
farms 1990-1992.
2) National seed service selected DNA farms as one of the five farm to serve
as seed production center in the federation.
3) Following our success in raising 20,000 Tenera palm seedlings from NIGOR
nuts, for the farm, in 1994, the Federal Department of Agriculture selected
our farm to raise 1 million palm seedlings under the Accelerated Industrial
Crop Production Programme.
4) DNA farms has remained the most important cassava contract grower to
the Imo ADP, and accounting for 80% of all the cassava cuttings sold to Imo
farmers during the launching of the cropping season each year, including
2008.
All these achievements were made possible by the use of both traditional and
modern professional consultants in every aspect of agribusiness we have
engaged in for the past 20 years. Of special mention are agricultural luminaries
like Prof Mike Iloeje, Prof Obiefuna, Dr. Sab Ejiofor, Engr. Emeka Chinweze all of
the Federal University of Technology Owerri and Mr. Atu Onyemelukwe of the
National Agricultural Research Institute(NIHORT) Okigwe.
CEO of DNA farms, Chief Dave Amonu, has written several memos on agriculture
including the one to the council of state on agriculture and the Imo state
government in 1992 and 2003.
