Catalog Description:
Leadership II: Professional Development Skills (2) (F,S)
(P: Acceptable portfolio progress; P/C: BUSI 2200. Survey and application of professional
development skills necessary for effective business leadership
NOTE THESE KEY CLASS POLICIES
1. Blackboard: http://blackboard.ecu.edu. All registered students should have access. It is the student’s responsibility to
immediately inform the instructor when having problems accessing course materials. All lecture notes, announcements
and assignments will be found on Blackboard. Students must check blackboard regularly for announcements and
updates.
2. Laptop Usage: The use of laptops is not permitted for class activities without prior approval. No other electronic
devices (e.g., PDAs, cell phones, iPods/mp3 players, etc.) are permitted during class time.
3. Scan Sheets: Each student must supply his/her own “bubble” scan sheet for quizzes and exams. They are available in
the bookstore. Bring a scantron form to class every day. They will be used for quizzes and exams. Failure to have a
scantron when a quiz/exam is administered will result in a “0” for that quiz/exam.
4. Professionalism: Professional behavior will be expected at all times during class. No hats will be allowed at any time.
While Business Casual dress will not be required every day, please dress appropriately for class. There will be assigned
days when business casual dress is required. There will be 2 occasions when Business Professional Dress is required.
Please plan to have a business suit, light colored shirt and tie for men, appropriate top for ladies, dress shoes. If you
need assistance with obtaining these items, please see your instructor earlier in the semester.
5. Attendance: Students will be allowed 2 absences without penalty. Additional absences will result in a 10 point
reduction in the attendance grade for each subsequent absence.
6. Student Expectations: Each student is expected to come to class prepared. Class assignments must be read and work
ready to turn in at the beginning of class. Students will be expected to participate in discussions. Failure to be prepared
for class will also result in a 10 point grade deduction
Extended Description: Examines topics in professionalism and leadership; giving the student tools necessary to monitor
and manage themselves in diverse, professional environments throughout their career

Course objectives:
The students will be able to:






Understand why Professionalism and Business Etiquette matter.
Understand the concept of Ethics and have knowledge of personal values and beliefs.
Develop an understanding of Culture and Diversity in order to evaluate companies and
situations for cultural fit based on knowledge as well as personal values.
Demonstrate job search competence by developing a resume, registering with COB career
services and building personal, in addition to professional networks.
Recognize that every encounter, whether in person, written or verbal portrays an image.
Recognize appropriate workplace conduct.
Discussion Board: Discussion forums will be activated for all homework assignments and exams. Please address
questions about the homework or exams to these discussion boards. The instructor will monitor
them on a regular basis, and provide feedback and guidance for the entire class. Please make full
use of these forums. This will make it easier for you to get your questions answered and to share
your learning with your classmates.
Grading:
Grading will be on a ten-point scale.
A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F= less than 60

Any student caught cheating will receive a “0” on the deliverable and will be considered for a failing
grade in the class.
Students may not submit work that has been previously submitted for any other class assignment.
Some assignments will be required to be submitted through SafeAssign.
Assignment Overview
Practice interview
100 pts
Each student will take part in a practice interview. The student will interview for the imaginary job that they wrote the
cover letter for. The student will be graded on professionalism and demeanor. Business Professional Dress is required
for this assignment. A thank you note must be sent to the interviewer within 48 hours of the interview in order to
receive full credit. Students will sign up for an interview with the career services office. Practice interviews will begin
Feb 22 and must conclude by March 29.
The Edge Perspective (Ethics)
100 pts
Edge Perspective - Junior Year _
Directions: Respond to the item below in the space provided. Remember that the report must be written with the
same attention to spelling, grammar, and professional presentation to which all College of Business documents are
expected to conform. At a minimum, paper should be two full pages and adequately address the topic.
Topic: Discuss an ethically-complex decision you made during the past four years; describe what factors entered your
decision making and why you think you made the right decision at that time.

The student will write a cover letter using the principles covered in class for writing an effective cover letter. The cover
letter will be written for a generic job description provided on blackboard
Strengths Assessment and Personality Write up
100 pts
The student will take the Strengths online assessment and provide the assessment print out as well as a 2 page write up
on the Strengths assessment. The student should define the Strengths assessment tool and the top 5 strengths
identified. Discuss what you learned about your personality type, the implications of this for leadership, your strengths
and weaknesses based upon leadership type, and challenges and opportunities this may present as a future leader. The
paper should be a full 2 pages and fully address the topic while also adhering to professional writing principles.
Dining event
100 pts
Each student is required to attend the formal dining event. This event will satisfy a portfolio requirement. Each student
must register for one of the dining events no later than March 1 2012. The event will Cost $20 dollars to be paid at the
Chick-fil-A in the Croatan. You may pay for this event with Pirate Bucks, Credit or debit cards.
You must be in professional dress for this assignment. If you need assistance in obtaining an appropriate business suit,
please see the instructor at the beginning of the semester.
The events Dates will be announced at the beginning of the semester and also posted on blackboard.
There are limited seats per event and they will be filled based upon who pays first. You must attend the event for which
you registered. Your receipt will be your entry ticket.
Professional Reading
100 pts
Students will complete a Book Review on one of the books on the BUSI3200 approved reading list posted on
Blackboard. There will be no exceptions to the approved reading list.
Respond to each of the items below in the space provided. Remember that the summary must be written with the same
attention to spelling, grammar, and professional presentation to which all College of Business documents are expected
to conform. At a minimum, papers should be three - five pages and address all mandatory topics.
