(graded according to rubric we’ll review and you will receive)
Outline/Template
1) Main idea, topic sentence:
Developed nations have distinct geographical advantages compared to developing ones, and the
future bodes even worse for many developing nations as well.
2) Statistic/point you are using to compare or contrast
Of the four countries I researched, two nations stand out as “developed”. The U.S. and Australia are
up near the top of many economic, health, and social indicators.
3) Elaborate on statistic/point you are using to compare or contrast and relate to main point
All three countries have GDP’s, life expectancy, and literacy rates in the top 10% in the world and it
stands to reason that access to land, transportation routes (water), and resources (minerals, food,
energy) are a large reason why this high standard of living exists in Australia and the USA.
4) Statistic/point you are using to compare or contrast
Cambodia and Chad are relatively low, compared to the rest of world, in most economic, social, and
health indicators, including GDP, life expectancy, and literacy rates.
5) Elaborate on statistic/point you are using to compare or contrast and relate to main point
These three nations are all surrounded by relatively poor countries, zero ports in the case of Chad, and
rough climate and terrain regarding Cambodia, leading me to believe that geography has a lot to do
with their “lower status”, as relatively wealthy nations tend to trend towards higher standards of
living.
6-7) If you haven’t already, elaborate on what geography has to do with these observations.
8) Conclude…review, what’s this all mean???
What’s sad, disappointing is that a “rich get richer” cycle seems to exist here. Those that have the
basics available to them (health professionals, decent jobs, education, etc) have the ability to improve
their lives and those of their country. Countries like Chad and Cambodia are just trying to survive in
many respects, so they can’t really grow and prosper. Plus the population in under developed nations
is increasing at a greater rate, likely making the situation even worse moving forward.
