Current information on assessment criteria shall be made at the start of the course. Prerequisites: Basic biological courses ex. animal health care/ physiotherapy / veterinary medicine. Registered as a PhD-student or Master student. Objective: After completion of the course the student should: have a knowledge of manual chest physiotherapy, including indications, contraindications and protocols have a knowledge of how physiotherapy can assist in the management of pulmonary oedema have a knowledge of non-invasive ventilation, including weaning and brachycephalic airways have a good knowledge of breathing assistance techniques have a knowledge of motor relearning theory (both inductive and deductive methods) and the application to the canine patient have a knowledge of how to use reflexes as treatment techniques in the acutely injured neurological canine patient have a knowledge of sensory reintegration techniques and using theraband with neurological canine patients have a knowledge of treatment strategies to maximise the chance of recovery for acutely injured neurological canine patients Content: The course covers: Aspiration pneumonia management Pulmonary oedema management Brachycephalic airways weaning from general anaesthetic The use of CPAP in canine intensive care Motor relearning theory and application to the canine patient Utilising reflexes such as the crossed extensor reflex, the symmetrical tonic neck reflex and the proprioceptive placing reflex to aid in the rehabilitation of the acutely injured neurological canine patient Sensory reintegration techniques for the canine neurological patient This includes lecturers, demonstrations and practical exercises. Literature: Materials will be handed out during the course. Examination: Active participation during the course. The students are expected to read three provided articles in preparation and hand in a written reflection upon the scientific documentation and explanation models for the demonstrated methods as well as ways to assess the clinical effect of the interventions.
