Communication Items:

Chair Borrie will not be on campus for much of January. In his absence, he asks that
committee members think about agenda items for spring semester based on issues that have
arisen during this semester’s curriculum review. Some issues that will likely be considered
include early alert, T-designations, and the broader relationship of the Mountain campus in
curriculum development at the Missoula College.
Business Items:

History submitted a course form for the upper-division writing course that was approved, but
not in the catalog. It was presented as a seconded motion by the Humanities Subcommittee
and approved by ASCRC. The subcommittee is still waiting for follow-up on FILM 481.

381;
The follow-up consent agenda from the rolling review of writing courses were approved.
The English Department was given a deadline extension by the Writing Committee, to allow
it to address the Learning Outcomes and Writing Course Requirements for their UpperDivision Writing Requirement courses.

Management requested special consideration to offer BGEN 291 Business Communications
as a one-time only General Education course (approved writing course) for this spring.
There are two sections currently in the schedule, which will follow the new course proposal
submitted and approved for BGEN 200 Business Communications.. After deliberation
ASCRC agreed to grant the exception, but does not see this as setting a precedent.

The Committee briefly reviewed the Pre-requisite deadline memo. One error in the language
indicated that ASCRC would need to approve course restrictions that were previously made
in the schedule. ASCRC previously voted that these could be considered editorial and made
during catalog review. The memo requires further refinement. Chair Borrie will finalize and
send to the Committee.
The draft Prerequisite and Course Restriction Enforcement Technical Guide was shared with
the Committee. There are a few items that still need to be added. It will be refined and made
available when the deadline memo is sent.

The Writing Committee has noted that the designations for the approved writing course and
upper-division writing course in the major are confusing. A workgroup considered new
labels and proposed ‘Writing to Learn’ and ‘Writing in the Discipline’ as alternatives. Chair
Borrie outlined three separate aspects regarding the proposed changes to writing course
designations: (1) Confusion regarding the labeling of the two requirements in the catalog (2)
The need for searchability by students and advisors in Banner (Academic Planner,
Cyberbear), and (3) Reflecting writing in the title of writing courses on transcripts. ASCRC
agrees that there is confusion with the labeling of the two requirements, particularly since
some approved writing courses are offered at the upper-division. Secondly, it was noted that
both types of writing courses currently have a separate General education requirement course
attribute and are searchable through Banner. However, the current course numbers (eg.
ARTH 250L) do not include an indicator that a course holds the writing attribute. It would
appear that in Banner course numbers are limited to eight characters. Further, short course
titles are restricted to 26 characters, so adding writing (eg. (WRIT)) to the titles could be
problematic. Lastly it was noted that transcripts may not need to reflect writing course
approval, as employers can assume students know how to write if they have been granted a
college degree.
ASCRC agrees that there is a need for better identification for the writing courses, but does
not necessarily support the labels proposed by the Writing Committee. The item was sent
back to committee.
Good and Welfare

Subcommittee Chairs were reminded to return all signed forms to Camie, who conducts an
audit over the break to make sure nothing fell through the cracks.

Professor Gillison informed the Committee that Modern and Classical Languages and
Literatures department will not be asking for a petition regarding the General Education
language requirement to be placed on the Faculty Senate agenda this month. It will likely be
in February.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:22 PM.
