SUCCESS IN THE COMMUNITY Preparations are well underway. A cast of 32 talented actors and dancers have been rehearsing enthusiastically. Our Technology and Art departments have been hard at work on fantastic props and costumes. We look forward to seeing you there. A record number of students have been working in the community this term on the Year 11 ‘Community Care’ project. 30 students have been involved in work experience in primary schools, Mayfair Community Centre, residential homes & nursery schools. It is a very valuable & rewarding experience for our students & the feedback from the placements is extremely positive. A big thank you to the students who volunteer & to the organisations that welcome them. Tickets (£5 adults & £3.50 children & concessions) will be available from the school office in February. Due to expected high demand tickets will be released on a first come first served basis. _________________________ Youth Forum Sonny’s Success Sonny Pennington, 10V, is making big strides in the world of magic. Sonny is one of the country’s top young magicians and has already come to the notice of Paul Daniels & top American magic act Jeff McBride. He is a member of the Shropshire Magical Society and the Junior Magic Circle in London. This term, 15 Year 10 students have been involved in a community project led by Jo Alker at the Youth Forum. The project is designed to bridge the gap across generations, give the students improved self confidence and provide a service for the community. The students devised a project with Windsor Place & it was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated. We hope it goes some way towards combating the bad press teenagers often get and shows that people of all ages can work together. Well done to everyone & a special thank you to Jo & the Youth Forum leaders. David Mortiboy Carys Marshall Eleanor Walker Catriona Virden Holly Scott Annabel Rehana David Mortiboy Megan Marshall Carys Marshall Will Philips Jess Tearle Holly Hearle Rosanna Floyd Rosalind Charles Rachel Agius Eden-Kate Milburn Bethan Robinson Jamie Mawhinney Ellen Kerslake Following 3 day visits by Yr 5 & 6 pupils into Church Stretton School, a team of Yr 9 students returned to their old primary school in Bayston Hill to act as mentors for an exciting design challenge. Around 90 pupils were set the challenge of designing & making a scaled model of a Theme Park using junk modelling materials. Over 4 days, the Yr 5 & 6 pupils set to the challenge. On each of the construction days the Oakmeadow teams & staff were supported by Church Stretton Design Technology mentors. Students had the novel experience of sharing their Design Technology knowledge & skills with younger children & help them to learn & improve. Working on a base size of 2 square metres, the teams had to create at least four new & exciting theme park rides, with at least one of them having to move in some way. They also had to plan and model a complete layout for a theme park including simple things such as toilets, cafes, lakes, pathways & other features. Church Stretton School provided the equipment and supported the pupils to complete the project but the enthusiasm, support & flexibility of the staff at Oakmeadow School, helped to make it a really exciting & fulfilling 4 days for all involved. The children worked excellently together, old & young alike. With great focus and enthusiasm they produced outstanding theme parks that were all very different & full of imaginative ideas. Technology Liaison Officer for Church Stretton School, Mrs Jones said: “It is privilege to be able to take part in our wider community and meet a broad cross section of children and staff from many of our local primary schools.” The finale for the event will be the production of marketing material & a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style presentation that each team will present to the other pupils. Who will be the Dragons? I am sure will be a hotly debated topic!
