Hereford Cathedral Library and Archives LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES ASSISTANT (Part-time) Job description and person specification The Library and Archive Assistant supports the work of the Librarian and the Archivist in managing and caring for the historic and modern libraries and archives, delivering services to users, and supporting the mission of the Cathedral. The post holder reports to both the Librarian and the Archivist as appropriate. The role is multi-faceted and requires flexibility and a broad range of skills. The post is based in the modern library, situated on the top floor of the New Library Building. The job is part-time, 18 hours per week, preferably Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9.30am to 4.30pm. It may very occasionally require attendance at other times for special events. The salary is currently £6.20 per hour. Job description Dealing with requests made to the photographic and reprographic services, including identifying relevant digital images and editing them if necessary, liaising with the Photographer on the production of new images, dealing with payment and copyright permissions and maintaining records. Administration for the Cathedral’s Life and Learning programme, as directed by the Canon Chancellor, attending planning meetings, compiling the brochure and advertising material, distributing posters and flyers, keeping records of bookings and payments. Staffing the reading room desk during opening hours when no volunteers are available, responding to users' needs and passing detailed enquiries to the Librarian and/or the Archivist as appropriate. General administrative duties, including setting up the reading room, collecting the post, writing letters and filing. Assisting the Librarian and the Archivist with enquiries, made by email, by phone or in person. Assisting with the accessioning, classification, cataloguing and processing of new books in the modern library. Assisting with the processing of archives. Assisting with group visits to the library. Assisting with research and design relating to temporary exhibitions within the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library exhibition. Compliance with the Cathedral’s Health & Safety, Equality, other standard policies and procedures. Other related tasks as may be required. Person specification Excellent all-round IT skills, with competence in MS Office - Essential. At least one good ‘A’ level or equivalent in a relevant humanities subject (e.g. history) - Essential. Ability to demonstrate an interest in and enthusiasm for historic libraries and/or archives - Desirable. Experience of photo-editing software (e.g. Photoshop Elements) - Desirable. Experience of working in a library or archive and/or exhibition work - Desirable. Excellent customer service skills - Essential. Excellent administrative and organisational skills - Essential.
