Tutor Guide
Stage 1 Clearly stated learning aims (Aims appropriate to an individual learner or groups of learners)
Assist the learner in understanding and completing this section in relation to the course objectives. These will be related to
the course information sheet and are based on the topic areas to be covered on the course. Not all learners will complete
all of the course outcomes and some learners may wish to record wider or ‘soft skills’ as a learning outcome.
Ask the learners to rate how they feel about them during the first session so you can gauge their confidence levels and use
this to inform planning your session.
Stage 2 Establish the learners starting points (Initial Assessment)
Initial assessment includes finding out learner’s previous knowledge and experience in relation to the course and its
contents. You will also need to see if they require any help with reading, writing, numbers or other areas. This is a learner
self declaration and will feed into the group profile, session planning and resources.
Learners may also require additional support. This needs to be negotiated and agreed with the learner to help them whilst
they are on the course. Where appropriate a learner can complete a skills check for their English and Maths. The results
need to be discussed with the learner and feedback given on what their next step could be or if they could be referred to a
Functional Skills course (where available).
All the above information should be reflected in your planning and delivery.
Stage 3 Learning Objectives (appropriately challenging learning objectives)
Stage 4 Recognition and recording of progress and achievement (formative assessment)
Learners should be asked to record at least one personal target. This needs to reflect what they would like to personally
get from the course and be reviewed at key points throughout. It maybe as the course progresses that they are
renegotiated to reflect their learning and, dependent upon the course duration, revised to reflect the progress they have
made.
Learners need to record SMART learning outcome/s for the session which they are able to provide comment on what they
have learnt. A SMART learning outcome needs to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. You should
help the learners with this task. At the end of the session, you need to give effective feedback to the learners on what they
have achieved and record the evidence source – eg finished piece of work, written task, observation etc.
There should be a review of the learner targets throughout the duration of the course, although the frequency will be
dependent upon the length of the course itself. It is important to record was has been discussed in the review and any
targets that have been renegotiated. During the course, there is likely to be additional or unplanned learning which can be
recorded by the learner as it occurs.
For ASB courses, this section can be replaced by the assessment records required by the Awarding Organisation.
Stage 5 Review of overall progress and achievement (summative assessment)
At the end of the course you will need to complete a final review of the learners’ progress against the course outcomes
and learners personal goals. The learner needs to use this time to reflect on what they have achieved and discuss their next
steps. You will also be required to provide feedback to the learner on their achievement and provide evidence on meeting
the learning outcomes.
It is important to discuss with the learner their next steps and provide information, advice and guidance on how this can be
supported. The learners intended progression also needs to be coded on the register as appropriate.
