Alex Rowe narrowly missed out on a European medal in the Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships being held in Torun in Poland on Monday. In the 3000m he quickly assumed 2nd position on the second lap of 15 and completed the first half of the race in pole position. Relinquishing this place he stuck in third until two laps to go when he dropped to fourth. On the final lap with 200m to go he made his moved but he was gunned down with 20m to go losing the bronze medal by 0.61 of a second finishing 4th in 10:00.42. This was an improvement of 9.15 seconds on his silver medal position a fortnight earlier at the British Masters Championships at Lea Valley. The action continues all week with the cross country and 1500m for Rowe on Friday. Rob Danson ran the top class Wilmslow Half Marathon in a strong field, finishing 27th with an impressive new personal best of 1:11:55. The winning time was 1:04:57 showing the quality of the race, but this is a renowned fast course and an excellent event. Simon Eaton finished 569th in 1:33:51, a good run for the M40. There were 4079 finishers in this popular event. Wesham had a good team out at the Coniston 14 road race on Saturday in good bright spring weather for running. The winning time was slow however in 1:20:37 with only 6 runners inside 1:25; conditions were cold and windy in the second half on the wooded eastern bank of Coniston Water and this will have affected performances. Lee Barlow finished 28th and 4th M40 in 1:28:26. Steve Myerscough was 44th and 8th M40 in 1:30:13 in training for the London Marathon again. Jason Barlow placed 52nd and 11th M45 in 1:31:14. Catherine Carrdus was top of the Wesham women coming in 3rd woman overall and 1st W40 in a time of 1:33:39, in 70th place overall in the race. Nicola Unsworth was 26th woman and 7th W40 in 1:45:53, 217th overall. Helen Lawrenson was 32nd woman and 2nd W45 in 1:48:03, 256th overall. Tracey Hulme placed 55th woman and 4th W50 in 1:53:30, in 256th place overall. Sara Ward was 69th woman, 7th W45 and 421st in 1:55:50. For the men Paul Gregory started off his year of Lakeland runs with 80 th place, running 1:34:41 for the 14 miles. John Collier was first M60 in a time of 1:35:18 placing 86th overall. John Bertenshaw was 170th overall in 1:43:05, 8th M55. George Kennedy dropped off the pace and came in 422nd in 1:55:50, 31st M55. Peter Bartlett was 7th M65 and 560th in 2:02:07. The winning woman clocked 1:29:02. The Wesham women won the female team but the men placed 3rd. Troy Watson ran the Trimpell 20 race on Sunday, finishing a modest 262 nd with a time of 2:52:29, his best performance being 2:09:43. Graham Vickers continued his preparation for the London Marathon with a run here finishing 444th in 3:24:04 following serious illness last year. In a weekend double Nicola Unsworth ran the Garstang Gallop 6-mile race on Sunday, running 1:01:10 finishing 20th woman and 78th overall, 4th W40. George Kennedy provided pace maker duties and he came in 77th in 1:01:09, 6th M55. John Howorth was in the same group placing 79th with 1:01:11 as 4th M60. Nicky Omar came in 92nd in a time of 1:05:17 and Clive Berry was 105th with 1:09:41. Karl Lee ran a fine 17:20 for a new personal best having gained his 50 parkruns t-shirt two runs ago. His age graded performance was 74.52%. David Taylor ran 18:54 for 68.25%, his 41st run in just over a year.
