Departmental Kaiāwhina Training 2012 Professional Development Workshops for Kaiāwhina, Māori Support Staff Tēnā Koe Naia te mihi kau atu o te rā ki a koe As one of the University’s valued Kaiāwhina supporting Māori students and Māori development within your place of work, we invite you to attend a Professional Development training session developed for Departmental Kaiāwhina. The University is committed to recognising bicultural competencies and Kaiāwhina training is a new addition to our current programme. The training is specific to your role and aims to support you in your learning and your professional development. The sessions have been put together by staff including the Academic Deans Māori, Kaiārahi, Māori Centre, and the Office of Māori Development, and includes your contributed ideas. The training also supports new HR policies. There is the newly endorsed Academic Titles booklet and a revised Academic Promotions Policy, which integrates aspects of the MSF from 2012. As well, Māori competencies are being embedded into the PDR process for General Staff, to take effect in 2013. These initiatives bring a greater sense of responsibility and accountability among staff for the progression and normalising of MSF goals at the University. The training sessions will help lay a foundation for these changes and provide additional tools and resources for you to be empowered in your valued service role. Most importantly, the sessions will give you an opportunity to liaise with Kaiāwhina in other Divisions, learn where to go to for support, and who to refer other staff/students to for expert advice. You will have the opportunity to learn from colleagues, share your own knowledge, and tell us what additional support or information you need. Three sessions are planned to be held at the HEDC Seminar Room with capacity for up to 20 people at each. A full day workshop for further discussion is planned for November, at one of our local marae. Information about the forthcoming Training Sessions has been sent to your Head of Department by each of the Academic Deans Māori or Kaiārahi in your Division but if you need additional information in order to apply for time out of work, please contact one of the following people: University of Otago: HEDC, OMD, Māori Centre, Divisions, Support Services – PD Training and Support Departmental Kaiāwhina Training 2012 School of Business: Corey Bragg (ext 5342) Sciences: Stephen Scott (ext 9201) Humanities: Ana Rangi (ext 8681) Health Sciences: Jo Baxter (ext 6548) The session dates are: Monday, 2 July Monday 27 August Monday 12 November all from 9.30am – 1.30pm, including a light lunch.
