October 1, 2015 Thursday Day 10 SWBAT: Access canvas and take a practice quiz The purpose of this is to be sure we can all access it before the real quiz Friday (microscope use and parts). Use a microscope safely Illustrate objects in nature and make qualitative and quantitative observations W-ups 1. What types of observations can a person make? (Me we next) 2. What are microscopes used for? (Me we next) 3. How should you carry a microscope? (Me we next) Activity 1 Canvas practice quiz- go into canvas and open “canvas quiz 1” (it is located in the module) Take the quiz. Activity 2 Short video about how to use a microscope Activity 3 Sketching nature- use petri dish to claim the range of the sketch 1. Fold a sheet of paper in half. This will make 2 boxes on the front and 2 boxes on the back. 2. use a petri dish (or mug if you are at home) to draw a circle at the top of each box (4 boxes total) 3. place a natural object in or under the petri dish and sketch only what fits inside the perimeter of the dish. This will mimic the field of view in a microscope. 4. Draw a total of 4 objects to scale using the petri dish to delineate the area. Remember: sketch only what fits within/under the dish 5. label the sketches -Object name -Magnification= 1x (no magnification) -label parts as needed 6. list 5 qualitative observations for each (descriptive terms) 7. list 5 quantitative observations for each (numerical terms: measurements or counting) DUE Monday October 5 at the beginning of class. (stamped only if complete and on time) Homework: whatever you don’t finish from the sketching/observation activity, be sure to complete before class Monday.
