RADIOLOGY
An aim of the program is to provide the student with basic and clinical experience in conventional
radiology, CT, MR, ultrasound, and interventional radiology. The teaching process is focused on both
physical and anatomical background of imaging as well as on practical application of radiology in
clinical routine. During the course students are expected to gain clinical experience and understand
the role of the radiologist in clinical practice by observing diagnostic and therapeutic imaging
procedures, and discussing clinical cases.

SYLABUS

Aim of the Course:
To provide basic knowledge on cross-sectional anatomy, physical and technical principles of medical
imaging, indications and contraindications for particular imaging techniques, and radiation safety. To
provide basic knowledge on diagnostics of the most common pathologies with the use of modern
imaging modalities.

Topics of Classes:
1. Elements of x-ray systems. Physical backgrounds of x-ray emission. Physical characteristics of
ionizing radiation. Imaging systems. Image development and processing. Imaging procedures in
radiography and ultrasonography.
2. Ultrasonography and computed tomography: physical backgrounds, options of imaging,
indications and contraindications, method limitations, patient preparation. Discussion on basic
pathologies basing on current examinations. Contrast media.
3. Radiobiology: impact of ionizing radiation on cells and tissues, radiosensitivity, radiation
protection, radiation doses.
4. Radiographic anatomy of the chest. Chest imaging: radiography, fluoroscopy, conventional
tomography, bronchography, ultrasound, CT, MRI. Normal chest images. Basic issues in chest
imaging.
5. Pneumonia in children and adults, tuberculosis, abscess, coniosis, chest injury.
6. Pulmonary tumors: lung cancer, metastases. Pulmonary cysts. Atelectasis, emphysema,
pathologies of the pleura. Imaging of mediastinum.
7. Imaging of the heart and the great vessels: radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI. Congenital
diseases, cardiomyopathies, ischemic heart disease, pathologies of pulmonary circulation,
diseases of the pericardium.
8. Imaging in stomatology, laryngology, ophthalmology. Imaging of the breast. Imaging of the
thyroid.
9. Imaging of the alimantary tract, liver, bile ducts, pancreas and spleen: anatomy, procedures,
imaging options (radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, interventional radiology).
10. Pathologies of the liver and spleen: hepatomegalia, splenomegalia, focal and diffused diseases,
pathologies of gall bladder and bile ducts. Pathologies of the pancreas: acute pancreatitis,
chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic neoplasms.
11. Alimentary tract: esophagus, stomach, duodenum – congenital diseases, ulcerative disease,
neoplasms, inflammatory diseases.
12. Alimentary tract: small intestine, large intestine – congenital diseases, neoplasms, inflammatory
diseases. Acute abdomen: ileus and perforation. Abscess. Ascites.
13. Imaging of the urinary system, musculoskeletal system, and nervous system: anatomy,
procedures, imaging options (radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, interventional radiology).
14. Urinary system: congenital diseases, urolithiasis, neoplasms, inflammatory diseases, injury,
renal hypertension.
15. Musculoskeletal system: symptomatology, congenital diseases, neoplasms, inflammatory
diseases, degenerative diseases, injury.
16. Neuroradiology: imaging of the brain and spine, imaging algorithms, congenital diseases,
neoplasms, inflammatory diseases, degenerative diseases, injury.
17. Magnetic resonance imaging: physical backgrounds, imaging options, sequences, indications
and contraindications, protocols. Discussion on basic pathologies basing on current
examinations. Contrast media.
18. Interventional radiology: physical backgrounds, imaging options, indications and
contraindications, complications, therapeutic procedures. Discussion on basic pathologies
basing on current examinations.
RULES AND REGULATIONS
Information about the course
The coursework of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging includes 80 hours of tutorials and exercises.
Tutorials and exercises are prepared in a week cycle. The course is divided into Core Radiology on 1 st
semester and Organ-Based Radiology on 2nd semester. The course ends with a final test exam. The
final test will be timed in the schedule of the session.

Requirements and crediting
1.
The classes are obligatory. In the case of the illness a sick leave has to be delivered. Other
absences due to important reason must be documented. In the case of the absence the respective
topics have to be credited. Students presenting with unjustified and uncredited absences will not
be credited and allowed for the final exam.
2.
Each Student is obliged to come for the classes on time. Delayed Students can enter the class only
if the time of delaying does not exceed 15 minutes from the moment the classes have been
started.
3.
Students are obliged to prepare the respective part of the material for each classes. Topics are
listed in Syllabus. The knowledge and the activity of each Student will be noted. In the case of a
negative note the Student has to pass the respective topics till the end of the course.
4.
Students are obligated to clean up after themselves. Eating, drinking, and using mobile phones
during the labs are prohibited. Any accidents, injuries and other emergencies must be
immediately reported to the Tutor.
5.
Students are obliged to follow ethical rules as well as the rules of deontology, especially when
attending live cases.
6.
Students are obliged to observe copyright and respect the right of intellectual property of
electronic publications as well as printed collections (published works, master’s and bachelor’s
dissertations, course books etc.)
Final Exam
1. The final exam consists of multiple choice questions (only one answer correct).
2.
Students who failed the Final Exam are obliged to retake the test.
3.
The final scores of the final exam are not changeable.
4.
The scores of the failed final exam and the retake will be confirmed by a signature in the Student
Book as two separated scores but not as the mean of these two.
5.
In the case of an absence a sick leave has to be submitted to the examiner within three days after
the final exam.
6.
The final exam will be assessed according to the following scores:
