Wk 3 Class workbook: Grammar for casual conversation: past tense verbs, modals, noun groups, prepositional phrases, reported speech. Diagnostic tests – practice with a volunteer (recorded on a voice recorder). Students self-evaluate against assessment criteria checklist. Real practice: conversations with the sports students/ volunteers. Computer lesson: access Blackboard and complete casual conversation grammar online tasks. Wk 4 Class workbook: Understanding idioms and colloquial language. Game: matching the idiom flashcards. Class workbook: learning how to tell a recount or anecdote and sequencing events. Using direct and indirect speech. Real practice: conversations with the sports students/ volunteers. Computer lesson: research casual conversation idioms and write a list of 10 and the meanings. Wk 5 Class workbook: Practicing speaking strategies: greetings, agreeing/disagreeing, turn-taking, seeking clarification, using adjacency pairs, sustaining a dialogue, pre-close and closing. Real practice organized with peers, volunteers and Sports Program students. Computer lesson: write a reflection on the Blackboard discussion board about the conversations with the sports students/volunteers/neighbours etc. Wk 6 Class workbook: Pausing, stress and intonation in casual conversation. Pair work: writing a dialogue with assessment criteria included. Scenario given with examples of topics.
