Module: Module B Intermediate Listening and Speaking skills for Casual Conversation
Nominal hours: 60
Wk 1
Explain course outline. Explain assessments and assessment criteria. Handout class workbook for Module B. Explain
conditions of assessment and provisional test date.
Wk 2
Listen to dialogue in the class workbook. Study the stages of a casual conversation, look at greetings and closing.
Complete worksheet on ‘stages of a casual conversation’ as a listening task. Study question formulation. Use worksheet
to help students practice the questions. Real practice: conversations with the sports students/ volunteers. Computer
lesson: access Blackboard course and study stages and expressions in casual conversations. Listen to benchmark
examples of casual conversations and other resources recommended for Module B.
Wk 3
Class workbook: Grammar for casual conversation: past tense verbs, modals, noun groups, prepositional phrases,
reported speech. Diagnostic tests – practice with a volunteer (recorded on a voice recorder). Students self-evaluate
against assessment criteria checklist. Real practice: conversations with the sports students/ volunteers. Computer lesson:
access Blackboard and complete casual conversation grammar online tasks.
Wk 4
Class workbook: Understanding idioms and colloquial language. Game: matching the idiom flashcards. Class workbook:
learning how to tell a recount or anecdote and sequencing events. Using direct and indirect speech. Real practice:
conversations with the sports students/ volunteers. Computer lesson: research casual conversation idioms and write a list
of 10 and the meanings.
Wk 5
Class workbook: Practicing speaking strategies: greetings, agreeing/disagreeing, turn-taking, seeking clarification, using
adjacency pairs, sustaining a dialogue, pre-close and closing. Real practice organized with peers, volunteers and Sports
Program students. Computer lesson: write a reflection on the Blackboard discussion board about the conversations with
the sports students/volunteers/neighbours etc.
Wk 6
Class workbook: Pausing, stress and intonation in casual conversation. Pair work: writing a dialogue with assessment
criteria included. Scenario given with examples of topics. Guidance given by teacher for checks on grammar, spelling,

Computer lesson: type the dialogue using Microsoft Word. Game: ‘speed-talking’ with other Cert III students.
Wk 7
Class workbook: Inferences in conversation, expressing ideas indirectly. Role-plays: peer evaluation of role-plays and
teacher feedback. Identify gaps in student learning and provide support and further practice opportunities. Real practice:
conversations with the sports students/ volunteers. Computer lesson: self assessment of voice recordings, students to
transcribe their real dialogues with teacher or volunteers and identify the gaps in learning.
Wk 8
Complete the class workbook. Review learning. Prepare for formal assessment. Computer lesson: ‘Listening to
Australia’ unit and comprehension questions, similar activity to summative assessment.
Wk 9
Formal summative assessment: assessed one-on-one (voice recorder used). Feedback given. Schedule re-sits if required.
Computer lesson: support from computer tutor for re-sit students to practice further.
Wk 10
Re-sits conducted and feedback given. End of term activities and excursions. Casual conversations with peers and staff.
Results submitted to admin team.
