Explore and enjoy Jackie French books to support understanding of the substrand of ‘Examining Literature’:
Develop an understanding of the key features of literary texts and how
they work to construct a literary work ie plot, setting, characterization,
mood and theme.



Settings – specific language is used to describe the setting and influence
the mood of the reader.
Character development, plot tension and illustrations can make stories
exciting, moving and absorbing.
Comparison of texts by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley to evaluate
characteristics that define their individual style.
Develop an individual response to the ideas, characters and viewpoints
in literary texts. Relate texts to one’s own experiences.



Explore and compare characters and events, sharing personal responses.
Draw comparisons between personal experiences and that contained
within texts.
Share responses towards texts and develop points of view.
Identify the features of texts that influence personal preference for
different texts.


Identify feelings, thoughts and preferences relating to events and
characters.
Identify and explain how choices in language eg repetition influence
personal response to different texts.
Week Four
‘The Flood’ – Jackie French / Bruce Whatley
Recall knowledge of previously read texts by the same author and illustrator.
Determine pre conceived thoughts and knowledge of the topic – floods.
Read and explore the language, key features and illustrations in the text.
Respond to the literature through the following activities:
1 Respond verbally to the following four sentences –
The rain turned savage.
The river was the enemy.
The kindness of strangers bloomed like flowers after rain.
The river shone under the blue sky, a friend again.
2 The dog is not mentioned in the written text, we only see his picture. What is
the dog’s role in the story?
3 The tugboat is small but powerful like…
4 Create tugboats
Seniors –
Complete the above activities in the ‘Jackie French’ presentation previously
begun.
Use the folder titled ‘Work – The rain turned savage’ on the wiki to assist with
completion.
Wiki – story ‘Flood – Jackie French and Bruce Whatley’ read through this story
and use the coloured text to assist with completion of the above suggested
activity.
