RESEARCHING AND KEEPING A LOG BOOK
The first step in beginning a science fair project is to select a topic. A good
place to start is with your teacher or science teacher. They may have books
about experiments that you can borrow or he/she might be able to suggest
a topic. Another good place to look for books would be the media center or
public library close to you. Remember to Keep It Simple Student Scientists
(KISSS)! The more complex your topic is, the easier it is to make mistakes
or get incorrect data. Here are some general guidelines to use when
choosing a topic
 Choose a topic that interests you and makes you curious to learn
more.
 Choose a topic that you already know something about – you may
learn even more.
 Select a topic that will give measurable results, Building a model to
demonstrate something, such as an erupting volcano, does not give
measurable results.
KEEPING A LOG BOOK
As soon as you begin researching your topic, you should also begin
keeping a log book. A spiral notebook or composition book makes a great
log book. As you research, write down books, websites, and even teacher
conversations about choosing a science fair topic. Remember to date each
entry. Good scientists always keep a record of their research! You will see
more about log books in the experiments section.
