Annie has a combined two years of experience in hospice care, and is passionate about assisting individuals and families with needs at end of life, as well as educating the community on issues related to end of life care. Speaker: Norm Shrumm, St. Luke’s Hospice, Director of Spiritual Care Class Description: The care we are invited to join at the end of a patient's life journey can feel deeply personal and profound. We enter so late as strangers into an intimate life conversation that precedes us, yet is now seeking its proper end. However do we do it right? In this session former hospice chaplain Norm Shrumm will help us clarify our fears 2 IDQOL 2014 Hospice & Palliative Care Conference Schedule and our paths in these new and sometimes very sensitive settings, and help us learn from each other what means to companion the dying with sensitivity and wisdom. Norm Shrumm was pastor for Presbyterian Churches in California and Oregon 20 years before coming to St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in 2004 for his Residency in Clinical Pastoral Education. He worked in hospice care as he completed his Board Certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains, including five years as a chaplain for XL Hospice. In 2011 Norm returned to St. Luke's as Manager of Spiritual Care Services, working with a wonderful team of staff and CPE student chaplains. Define: Hastened Death and present statistical information and current research findings Educate: Provide education on 4 practices that are considered to hasten death o With holding life-sustaining treatment o Voluntary cessation of eating and drinking (VCED) o Palliative sedation o Physician-assisted death (PAD) Oregon Death with Dignity Discuss: Professional discussion on the ethical implications associated on hastened death practices Outcome: Clinicians will have greater understanding of practices that are considered to hasten death and have the opportunity to examine self-views, preparing themselves to address such issues with PT/Families as well as health care professionals. Frankie Larsen, LMSW is a LMSW and Director of Medical Social Services with Heart ‘n’ Home Hospice and Palliative Care, LLC. Frankie completed her education at Boise State University and has been working in hospice for four years. Frankie is passionate about working with individuals and their families at end of life and is a strong advocate for self-determination. We will discuss the fundamental ethical principles involved with preparing and using advance planning documents and surrogate decision making. Rick Bassett is the Adult Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist for St. Luke’s Boise and Meridian. Mr. Bassett obtained his Master of Science in Nursing degree from Idaho State University and is certified as a critical care nurse (CCRN) through the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), board certified as an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist through the American Nurses Credentialing Center and licensed as an Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). He currently serves on the Improving Palliative Care in the ICU (IPALICU) National Advisory Board, the Idaho Quality of Life Coalition Board of Directors, has been a consultant to the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 3 ICU–palliative care initiative and a subject matter expert, consultant and faculty member for the VHA Critical Care Innovation Network. He is currently the President of the Idaho Quality of Life Coalition, Chair of the Idaho POST Policy Committee, is a member of the National POLST Paradigm Task Force Board of Directors and Communication Committee, the Co-chair of the St. Luke’s System Institutional Review Board, a member of the St. Luke’s Ethics Committee and a Clinical Ethics Consultant for St. Luke’s Health System.
