These should be cross referenced to the course information sheet and are based on the topic areas to be covered on the course. Tutor will need to ask the learners to rate how they feel about their learning outcomes during the first session and gauge their previous knowledge. This information should be used this to inform planning and delivery. These course outcomes could be differentiated into ALL/Most/Some and agreed with the learner as most suitable Establish the learners starting points (Initial Assessment) Initial assessment includes finding out learner’s previous knowledge and experience in relation to the course and its contents. You will also need to see if they require any help with reading, writing, numbers, IT or other areas. This is a learner self-declaration and will feed into the group profile, session planning, delivery and resources. Learners may also require additional support. This needs to be negotiated and agreed with the learner to help them whilst they are on the course. On WFL programmes of 20 GLH or more, learners are required to complete a skills check for their English and maths. The results need to be discussed with the learner and feedback given on what their next step could be or if they could be referred to a Functional Skills course (where available). All the above information should be reflected in your planning and delivery. Identifying SMART targets with opportunities to recognise and record progress and achievement (formative assessment) Learners need to record SMART targets to make their learning outcomes individual for the course .A SMART target needs to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. You should direct the learners with this task. At the end of the session, you need to give effective feedback to the learners on what they have achieved and record the evidence source, e.g., finished piece of work, written task, observation etc. There should be a review of the learners individual learning outcomes throughout the duration of the course, although the frequency will be dependent upon the length of the course itself. It is important to record what has been discussed in the review and any targets that have been renegotiated. During the course, there is likely to be additional or unplanned learning which can be recorded by the learner as it occurs. Review of overall progress and achievement (summative assessment) At the end of the course you will need to complete a final review of the learners’ progress against their targets. The learner needs to use this time to reflect on what they have achieved and discuss their next steps. You will also be required to provide feedback to the learner on their achievement and provide evidence on meeting the learning outcomes. It is important to discuss with the learner their next steps and provide information and advice on how this can be supported. The learners intended progression also needs to be coded on the register as appropriate. ‘Trail blazing – the path to excellence’ ACL ILP Template 2015/16 – V1
