A two-day conference session is planned for Wednesday, April 24, 2013 and Thursday, April 25,
2013, with a reception on the evening of Wednesday, April 24, 2013. All registered attendees of the
Annual Meeting will receive complimentary access to the reception.
The Annual Meeting will offer scientific sessions in a variety of formats including large plenary
sessions and smaller concurrent sessions. Sessions will focus on issues and topics relevant to
“Promoting Prevention, Health & Wellness Across Our State.”
This conference is designed for public health educators, academic staff, county health officials and
employees, students, medical and dental practitioners, state health employees and others in the
field of public health, education and medical care.
Breakout workshops will be announced the first week of December.

Continuing Education
We are pleased to offer the following continuing education credits at the 2013 Annual Meeting at
no additional charge.
Continuing Education credits for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) have been
approved for up to 11.5 entry or advanced-level credit hours for the two-day event.
Continuing Education credits for Certified in Public Health (CPH) have been approved for up to
12 credit hours.
Continuing education credits for dentists by the New York State Dental Foundation and for dental
hygienists by the Dental Hygienists’ Association of the State of New York are available for specific
workshops.
Professionals seeking continuing education credits not listed above will be provided a completion
certificate upon request for self-submission.

Presented by: Marilyn Hoyt
Marilyn Hoyt is an active nonprofit consultant and writer. She has served 17 years as a member of the
Foundation Center’s institutional fundraising faculty, speaks frequently at conferences nationally, is a
member of the National Council of Science Museums certification faculty in India, serves as a member of
the Young Audiences Program Certification Team and is a reviewer for two foundations. Her past work
includes 12 years as a grantmaker for the Westchester Arts Council in New York and the Washington State
Arts Commission; fundraising consulting with various nonprofits including Planned Parenthood for
J.C.Geever, Inc; and 20 years at the New York Hall of Science first as head of advancement and ultimately
as President and CEO. There she raised nearly $200 million including a successful $92 million expansion
campaign doubling the Hall’s budget and attendance.
Marilyn is one of the authors of the Foundation Center’s newest book: After the Grant. She also authored
the fundraising chapter for the Handbook for Small Science Centers, and a recent article on exhibition
funding for an AAM journal. She reports on fundraising trends to a 2,000 colleague list and via e-reprint in
New York’s Oram Matters. Marilyn is a Trustee of Science Friday and the New York Association of Fund
Raising Professionals, Program Co-Chair for Fund Raising Day in New York, an Advisory Board member of
Columbia University’s Masters in Fund Raising program and Chicago’s Public Housing Museum, and Chair
New York State Public Health Association

of New Knowledge Organization. She is deeply interested in nonprofits led by and serving minority
communities. Her recognitions include a Latin American Women’s Council Fanny Calderón de la Barca
Award.
PLEASE NOTE: REGISTRATION FOR THE PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP IS A SEPARATE FEE. Registration
includes program, materials, lunch and continuing education credits.

Plenary Session
Presented by: Joyce Gaufin
Joyce Gaufin’s extensive career in public health has focused on supporting and developing the workforce,
and creating and strengthening collaborative public health partnerships. Her expertise in health
administration includes organizational development, quality improvement, performance management,
leadership development, public information, and emergency management. She recently retired as Executive
Director of the Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute (GBPHLI), and currently serves as a private
consultant and advisor to state and local health agencies, community boards, and academic public health
programs. She worked at the Utah Department of Health for almost 31 years, retiring in 2004.
Ms. Gaufin co-edited the book, Mastering Public Health: Essential Skills for Effective Practice (Oxford
University Press, 2011), with Dr. Barry Levy, and she has contributed to and reviewed articles for the
Journal of Public Health Management and Practice.
She is a former Chairperson for the National Public Health Leadership Development Network, and received
their 2012 Balderson Lifetime Public Health Leadership Award. She received the 1994 Theodore Bruce
Beatty Award from the UPHA for distinguished service in public health, the Utah Medical Association
Presidential Citation for her leadership with the Medicine/Public health initiative (1998), and the HAS
Chairperson’s award in 2000.

Keynote-
Presented by: Cathy Nonas, MS, RD
Cathy Nonas [MS, RD] directs the New York City Health Department’s Physical Activity and Nutrition
program. Trained as a clinical dietitian, she has spent years working to combat Type 2 diabetes and obesity,
both as a researcher at the federally funded Obesity Research Center here in New York City and as an
assistant clinical professor at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. Since joining the Health Department four years
ago, Cathy has worked on policy initiatives to increase physical activity for young children and improve
access to healthy foods in underserved neighborhoods. She helped develop New York City’s calorie-posting
regulation in chain restaurants, the Pouring on the Pounds public health education campaign to help reduce
sugar sweetened beverage consumption and last summer’s Make New York City Your Gym physical activity
initiative. Cathy has been instrumental in leading the NYC Green Cart program, an effort to expand the
number of mobile food vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables in underserved neighborhoods and helps
direct the largest farmers market fruit and vegetable purchase incentive program in the country. Many of the
programs Cathy helped realize are now being copied in other cities and municipalities across the nation.

Hotel Information
All events will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn on Hoosick Street in Troy, New York. A block of
rooms has been reserved for Tuesday, April 23, 2013 and Wednesday, April 24, 2013. Please call
(518) 272-1700 to reserve a room by April 1st under the New York State Public Health Association
(NYSPHA) block at a group rate of $96/night for standard rooms or $114/night for suites.
Transfer/Cancellation Policy
If you registered for the conference and cannot attend, you may transfer your registration to
another person. All transfer/cancellation requests must be submitted in writing and received by
NYSPHA no later than April 18, 2013. Please submit your request via email to info@nyspha.org.
 Cancellations received on or before April 18, 2013 will be refunded less a $10
administrative fee.
 Cancellations received April 19, 2013 or later are not refundable.
 Space at each event is limited no shows will be charged the full registration fee.
Important Information
Nearest Airport- Albany International Airport is the nearest airport to the events. Participants
arriving via air may rent a car on-site at the airport or take a taxi. Guests of the Hilton Garden Inn
are provided with complementary airport shuttle service. Please call the hotel at (518) 272-1700 for
more information. The airport is approximately 10 miles from the conference site.
Hotel Parking- Parking is free at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy. If the lot is full, a valet service will
be available free of charge.
Food & Beverage- Lunch and coffee breaks are included with your registration fee. The Hilton
Garden Inn’s chef has designed a menu to meet the “Healthy Meeting Guidelines” recommended
by the New York State Department of Health. Gluten-free options will also be available.

Conference Attire- Please keep in mind that meeting room temperatures vary. You may want to
bring a jacket or sweater to all sessions.
Payment Information- Registration fees may be paid via credit card (via PayPal) online only or
offline via check or purchase order. Registration on-site is available but telephone confirmation is
recommended as space is limited.
