The results, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, show that Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers helped people lose weight and then keep it off. Other programs showed promise for short term results however, the studies the authors reviewed were limited in duration and lacked evidence of long term results. The authors focused on rigorous studies, providing the best information available with a focus on studies of longer duration. There was a significant amount of new data since the previous review ten years ago but many programs need more research to prove their long term effectiveness. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends obesity screening and counseling and some health plans may cover the cost of commercial or proprietary weight-loss programs for overweight patients. This review of the clinical data gives doctors and obese patients updated information to review when choosing the appropriate weight-loss program.
